No the Ford six has been its own development, there was a little bit of influence in the head design between the AJ16 and the Barra but the bottom end is not related at all.
I remember seeing pictures on Facebook of an XR6 turbo conversion in an XJ, but it was a while ago now...

Would seem a good choice if you were going to swap something in. Even the later model standard Ford 6 has good power/torque and less weight the the XK. A turbo would be a brilliant car I think, as the Turbo 6 Fords were. Greatly underated I think.
Havent seen a 6 swap into an XJ6, just old SBC 350s like mine and 308FI motors.

Knowing the Barra motor inside and out, I recommend it for any conversion, IF it can fit. I've built a few setups in cars running over 450rwkws.
Such an easy motor to make power from - 400hp at the wheels with injectors, fuel pump and a tune, parts are readily available, ultra reliable.
They are just a large 6 cylinder, but so is the XK engine.

i have no idea what that ford engine is(any close pix)?
think how i feel when i mention putting an Audi V12 twin turbo Diesel into an XJS!
factory stock, 500HP,, 750torque, at 1800rpm, make a great street car, good MPG.
everybody shuts down.
i personally like unusual lumps, but the famous Chevy V8s are just common, been seein them around Fla. and texas for over 20years, back a few years, an XJS showed up for sale, it had a 454 BBC, big block chevy, in it, 4L80 trans, took around a year to sell for (( shame )), $1500. bucks! ran perfect ,to much torque, and not enough tire!

And yet, it's a shame to discard the XK power plant so readily. This engine set a global benchmark for its achievements back in the day, for many years unbeatable in motor sport. Many are still going strong 40 years later. It doesn't suit everyone, but some of us traditionalists enjoy bowing a little to preserving an engine which created a significant piece of motoring history. I'm certainly not against lumping, there are many workable permutations and thankfully we all have the right to cram whatever we like under the hood. I'll be sticking with the strong and rumbling XK unit that lives under mine!

It's a 4.0L inline six, dual overhead cam, with a turbo on the side, was only built and sold in Australia.

"tractor engine" ive never heard any one with an e type 4.2 refer to it as a tractor engine!
in this part of the world most lumped jags become wrecks impossible to sell and then donors for cobras and hot rods, at the end of the day if i wanted a ford or chev i would have bought one, its a similar situation with series land rovers being worthless with non genuine engines[im proud to say my 1958 series 1 runs the correct engine and not a holden].
How many tractor engines raced at Lemans?

Lemans???
Well, as I recall, a Ford "tractor engine" did fairly well. 1.2 & 3.
A big old "crude" OHV 427 V8. All iron.
And, just recently, did not Ford return to Lemans and fare quite well.
The GT40 is virtually "timeless".
In much earlier years, Midget auto racing was quite popular. Supposedly, cheaper in tougher times than the "big" cars.
Many engines powered these little racers. One, SOG
A Ford tractor sourced, a little flat head Ford.

its a shame about Ford /Barra closing some manufacturing in Australia, Darn just when things were getting good!
also seems GM/Holden are pulling back on some manufacturing in Australia.

Ford have basically had that motor around since the 250 crossflow in the 80's, with gradual changes, and the 4litre capacity came around 1990 in the EA falcon.
It received a twin cam cylinder head in 2002, and the turbo model was relased then as well. Was detuned for the public as the V8 model was less powerful, when the v8 was supposed to be the top end model.
Since then, power has been so easily produced from these motors, 400rwkws in an unopened motor is possible
