Default Rear sway bar to fit 1985 XJ6

I have a thread in Member Marketplace, but thought I would add one here too, maybe catch more attention. After some research and reading a piece on Steering and Suspension Modifications from Jag-Lovers, I'm looking for the small 9/16" bar that might have come on older XJS models or the 5/8" that came in the 1987-on Sportpack for the XJS. My impression is that the XJS and XJ6 layout in the rear will accept the same bar and radius rods. If I have the wrong impression, please set me straight.

I'm not much of a welder, so I would be interested in the sway bar compatible radius rods and as much of the hardware as I can get. I realize finding one of these is right up there with a pink unicorn, but I have to try. Addco sells a 7/8" bar for the rear, but that is too big for me.

Thanks,

Dave

Done a few over the years, LONG ago.

S2 cars, with PreHE XJS donors is scrap yards down here, NOT ANYMORE.

The S2 had the studs sticking out of the floor pressing, ready and willing. The rest was simple as.

Thanks Grant,
I read about the mounting studs being in place on the XJS, I was thinking if I get the bar and radius links I should be able to reverse engineer the body attachments and reinforcements. My plan.

As the years go by these are increasingly scarce

Here's one. Shipping might be expensive

These are the barckets that get welded to the rear radius arms; these are what the drop links attach to

Thanks Doug,
All three of your posts are very helpful, I appreciate it. Here's the bar I found on eBay, looks like just shy $400 to get it in my garage. I think that one is a deal breaker. I wonder if any other car had a bar that has the right bends and dimensions, or close enough. I would probably need to spend a day in the junk yard to find out.

Just one last question: did any S2 or S3 saloons ever come with a rear sway bar? Or am I only scouting the XJS?

ve,

I was working on removing a rear bar, and offering it to you, but it will not wiggle out.

I'll have to get the car on the hoist soon.

I'll send a private message,

Rob

And here's a post from many moons ago, about how to install the bar on an XJ
The car was a S1, but I would assume it's the same as your S3.

XJS only.

It would've been very easy for Jaguar to offer a "Sports Pack" option on the Series II-III cars using all XJS parts. I often wondered why they didn't. I reckon the marketing guys felt it wasn't a worthwhile venture.

Thanks Doug, probably series owners were not seen as "sportspack" people. Little did they know.

Belated post. Why did you use XKE drop links? What is the difference between them and the XJS units?

Thanks

You forced me to stretch my memory!

I now think they’re XJS drop links. As I recall new bushings are not shown for XJS drop links so I used XKE bushings.

I’m away from all my books and notes for a few days. When I get back I might be able to confirm all that.

Cheers

Don't go to any trouble Doug, I found a pretty good deal on after market items for the XJS. It was just one of those questions, I always say there's no such thing as too much knowledge.

Sway bar showed up a couple days ago, thanks again Rob. Have not been able to find bushings for a 9/16" bar, so I made them. My version of poly units. Drop links are easier, except they all reside on the UK side of the pond. Links are about $18ea and shipping is $45+. I wonder if the lone "tariff deal" our President has managed is in there somewhere. Anyway, here is what I came up with using nothing more than a few odd tools that were laying around the shop. Installation this winter.

Sway bar rehab complete. End links rebuilt, the astute may recognize where the new bushings came from. Hint: it would be very hot.

Looks really good, Dave.
I thought about putting one of those on Nix (husband found one at the time that's now gone), but already have a Much larger V12 front bar, and from what I read, if I put on the rear one too, I'd have the rear coming around to meet me when I least expected it. (read, Massive Oversteer)
As she already corners pretty flat, I think I'll leave well enough alone...... BUT IT'S HARD!!

You'd be OK with the factory-sized rear bar....which actually came in two sizes. They are rather small, 13mm and 15mm (or something close like that)

There are/were aftermarket bars out there that were 19mm and 20mm. Those are the ones that can get you into trouble....unless you go to an even larger front bar than what you already have.
