Good info, Doug, tks. I'm trying to get my new downpipe installed and was told that without replacing the O2 sensor, the check engine light will stay on...any thoughts here?

Your ‘82 doesn’t have a check engine light.

It probably WILL have a catalyst warning light. This is triggered by miles driven via the “Intervalometer”….which has no idea if the converter is in place or nor

Tks, and uderstand your comment about the interval light. Sorry for any confusion, but my car is an 85 XJ6 4.2. Will leaving the O2 sensor off create issues for the fuel injection?

Update...was able to read thru the posts above, and now understand I will need to add the sensor to the new pipe. Is it possible to reuse the sensor in the car, or should I go with a new part?

If the old one works it can be reused.

OTOH, oxy sensors are considered by many to be a “consumable” item so replacing it wouldn’t be a hateful idea

Update: Did a little searching online and found the new part to be available locally, and not as expensive as I thought it would be. Will follow your suggestion and go with new...keeping the old as a spare.
Thanks for the feedback!
