Question Repturing Expansion tanks Series 3 XJ6

Two months ago, I had to replace my brown plastic expansion tank as it had developed a leak along it's seam. I cannot recall where I ordered it from - could have been Moss, but not sure. It came without a cap, so I installed the new tank with the old cap. Three months later, the new tank is split again. The car was only driven for perhaps 300 km total.

I've ordered another from Welshent, and it appears to come with a new cap. If the relief valve in the cap fails to open, I assume the system would over pressurize and could rupture the tank? When up to temp (82 C) and idling in the driveway, the coolant is dripping from the seam.

Should I be looking elsewhere? The car does not overheat - mind you, it seldom goes for long runs.

Seems strange that this would happen twice in exactly the same way. Prior to the first failure, the system never had any issues in the 6 years that I've owned the car.

seems like the replacement tanks are no good. I have heard this before. Doesn't matter who you buy them from, they fail. Have you checked with David at www.everydayxj.com ?

No Jose,
I plan to contact Robert Laughton (down the road from me) in St. Catharines, Ontario. Robert has a field full of parts Jags, many of the XJ S3 line. I keep coming back to the Cap. I'll pull it today and check it out. It's very tight on the tank neck, and needs 2 hands to remove it.

Some of the replacement parts are not very good these days.

Plus, many vendors are selling the same part that comes from the same manufacturer so if there was the proverbial "bad batch" several vendors may have some duds sitting on their shelves.

I think getting a good used one is the best bet. The originals were good quality and didn;t really fail too often. You're chances of getting a good used one are high, IMO

Cheers
DD

Caught it from one member ! Asked him if I it would be more acceptable if I painted it black. He said yes. I may do that !

So, yesterday I went to Rob Laughton and pulled a used tank. It still had clean coolant inside and showed no signs of earlier leakage. Robert also recalls that the car it was pulled from was driven into its current spot. I cleaned it up installed it and no leaks. Now to run it for a few days, as the last new tank took about 500KM's to fail.
And of course the new tank from Welshent arrived today!

Anyone with XJ6/XJ12/(all series) or an XJS here in Canada should contact Robert for parts. Saves a ton on shipping charges and import duties. And to top it all off, Rob's a great guy and a massive source of knowledge. His prices are beyond reasonable! Robs number is (905) 932-0284.

Jose, Robert is a distribution agent for Leatherique products. I swear by it. I use it each fall before putting the car away for winter. The website is www.leatheriquecanada.com.

Robert does not have a website for his auto side. I just call him and ask if he has what I need and so far, he always has the item.
When I was there, he had the prettiest ever - what he calls his XJ6 Series 1/2/3. Its got a S1 front and back end, a e-type 4.2 engine, a 3.54 LSD rear end, Series (who knows what) brakes, a mostly S3 interior (I think), Modified exhaust and the list goes on and on.

I told him not to let Elinor see it or she'd be up here in a FLASH! And, although shiny black it not my go to colour, it's gorgeous.

Robert, Put a picture of that beauty on the Forum please!

I am looking for the bootlid "Jaguar" emblem for my 1984. It is a different script style than 1985-on.
The chromed finish on mine has almost erased.

Can't find a new one of the same script style.

the chrome in mine has washed off in sections. The XJ-6 emblem is intact.

Out of curiosity have you looked at getting it rechromed? Other than the finish it looks in good shape…

No I haven't, I don't know who could rechrome just the surface, as you know the rest is black.

Maybe chrome the whole thing and repaint what should be black as black?

If you don’t have a chrome plating shop handy, you could talk to some of the custom car or motorcycle shops to see who they use (or if they might do it for you).

thanks, that is a good alternative, (to chrome it completely). I have tried to remove the clips behind it and have only achieved cutting my fingers. I'm ready to use a blade and just cut through the pins. I can use Gorilla tape to reinstall it afterwards. That's how Ford applies their emblems.
