Default S3 XJ6 Auto Transmission Problem

So my 84 XJ6 trans is giving me issues.
I was driving last night car fully warm and running fine, It started loose power / slip normal revs but less progress, then no progress. It would reverse properly but not go forward in any gear, shifter intermittently difficult to move. I got it towed home,
After it was towed and had sat it started fine and it drove easily into the garage, fluid level looked low for hot but since I wasn't sure of the trans temp I rechecked this morning. Level full for cold, fluid looks clear. Starting her up this morning again will reverse fine but struggles, hunts to go forward on the level.
Any ideas greatly appreciated, this is my first "old" car with a auto as a kid I learnt what I know about cars on manuals so auto's confuse me

Hoping it is just low fluid level. Check again with engine running in Park after shifting through all gears.

Another possible.

The cable connecting te shift lever to the arm on the left side of the transmission has come adrift. The housing in which the cable travels must be secure.

I had the magnet bounce up into the tubes and get stuck, then it caught debris in the tube and blocked it. You could drop the pan and take a look.

The fluid level was very low, topped up and still the same problem, guessing damage due to low fluid?

very low fluid? I don't think it would damage the transmission. If it is not going forward, it must be the bands are shot, which might require removal and rebuild.

but not worth rebuilding. Cost to rebuild will be around $1,600. with labor. You can get a good used transmission for around $750. shipping included..
