Well, this is a new one. Went to start my 77 XJC today that’s sat for three weeks and the seat belt reminder buzzer would not shut off after startup. Not only would it not cycle off, but it remained on after I shut the car off and removed the key. The only way I could get it off was to disconnect the battery. I started the car yesterday as we were going to take it up the coast today, and didn’t have a problem. Yes, I did try cycling the door switch. I should add the cabin is damp from condensation from our daily temperature swings and recent heavy rains. Obviously there’s a relay gone south, where is it? Does simply removing it - I hate the damn thing anyway - inert anything else?
Thanks

You might want to check the pressure switch in the passenger seat base. If that switch has got stuck in the On position, the warning will come on until the passenger seatbelt is fastened. However, that should only be with the ignition on.

turn the key to get that annoying speaker going, remove the left knee bolster panel, get a small flashlight, contort your body so you can watch/listen for the source of the buzzer then unplug it.
I can't speak for '77 but '76 has a Very annoying buzzer that made itself known soon after I got the car.
I found the component over above the Passenger's knee, very near the glove box up under the dash. Has about 30 wires going to it.
No one could tell me how to fix it at the time so I unplugged the lot.
Oil warning, High beam still work on the panel as if nothing else changed.

Thanks.
I didn’t have time this AM to go on a search. It definitely originates from the passenger side panel under the glove box.
I was just glad I didn’t get well down the road and have it crop up then.
‘Which would be of course the more typical pattern.
I was more on the mark than I knew when it was christened “The Mistress.”
I didn’t take a photo, but I found the SOB behind the right lower corner of the glove box. And as luck would have it, it’s powered by a separate inline fuse holder dangling down adjacent to it. (Don’t you love how cars of this era have supplemental fuses randomly scattered about the vehicle, especially in out of the way places behind the dash?) Removed the fuse, put a piece of dowel in it to make sure it stays inert, and done. Installed a tab to hold down the actuating switch on the door frame and render it inop as well.
And while I was down on my knees looking into the passenger footwell, what do I spy but daylight! The firewall gasket surrounding the main electrical cabling just under the battery was in sad condition. Surprised the wife never asked why her foot was getting wet, although we generally don’t drive the Jag on wet days. A generous application of rubber sealing tape was in order.
Of course, when I started in on removing the offending alarm, it had decided to function normally again. And reassembling all the bits of the dash naturally took longer than anything else.
‘For the curious in the US this is it.
1. Did not know the cars had a belt warning light!!! PO must have silenced it at the time he disconnected the ignition buzzer!!! I will leave that as it is silent
2., I did reconnect the igntion buzzer. Somehow, i don't mind it!!! Did not like the dangling wire!!
