Default Series 1 XJ6 Oil filters - Go OEM or Spin-on Adaptor?

About to change my oil but OEM Series 1 XJ6 Oil filters appear to be sold out everywhere. What are people doing regarding oil changes? Seems like this should be a sticky topic given the large number of cars but I can't find any discussions re Series 1 XJ6 spin-on adaptors or any sources for OEM cartridge filter elements. Help!!

My S1 has the spin on type filter conversion.
But a quick eBay search brought up 4 sellers of the cartridge type S1/S2 filter on the first page.

Two of the adds say “last one” though. Go for the conversion and you will always be able to find a filter.

why would that be? Filter cartridges are available for Jaguar as far back as 1955 so why should 1969 be obsolete? I did convert my 1965 S type to spin-on filters but only because of the mess created by the old style canisters when replacing filters.

Hello,

I have this left from my 38 years of driving S1's.
This is all you need for the spin on conversion.
The small outlet would have to be blocked. It is for the later

style oil to cam feed line, but yours has this line off the block on the exhaust side, so the feed is not required.
New gasket, and 2 new filters.
$125 US plus post.
I can get a postal quote if I have a zip.
Thanks,
Rob

I am pleased you have raised this matter. Just a couple of years ago I could get original type filters for $20. Now it seems they are twice that price and as Clarke says running out fast. I wonder if the old toilet roll trick really works?

I tried the toilet paper roll decades ago and felt it was way too restrictive. Oil pressure dropped about 5psi.

Aye, the old TP filter was hazardous. It required the old type TP that was firm and far from soft.

Use of the modern soft wipes will dsintegrate and kill an engoine. My son bought an old chev truck from a neighbor. Bad enegine. Indeed, it had a TP filter set up.

but, he repurposaed the filter. using old type "chep" paper. On the parts washer. filters the solvent as it ois used. Slick.

Car.

Two:

1. Lousy typing.. "Cheap".

2. Error.. Nothing is cheap anymore.

3. I think the name of ther TP filter was Frantz ?

My '73 came with a few oil filters still in the box. I converted the car to spin-on so I won't need them. Let me dig them out and see how many I have.

I see RockAuto lists them, although with a one day delay. AC Delco PF1436

Well I was able to find a couple of filters and installed one after the oil change. This was my first time on my recently acquired Series 1. Not bad and minimal spill. To be honest I was expecting more of a hassle. Trick for me was to cover the steering rack with plastic and place the oil catcher directly beneath. A little messy when you remove the plastic but truly minimal (~ 1 tablespoon) spillage. I will continue to use the original style filter as long as they are available.

Of course while I was under the car I was able to inspect the rear engine(gearbox) mount and it had perished. That accounts for my bouncing gear lever! Ordered the parts and rebuilt the mount. Not too bad a job but getting the new rubber mount into place is a bear. Next time I need to experiment with temporarily softening the rubber to see if that helps with placement into the support panel. Also rebuilt the slave cylinder which had a slight leak...super easy job; though one of the two mounting studs stripped out of the bell housing so I had to fix with a new helicoil insert.
