Shaky steering when braking

Shaky steering when braking
Hi,
any idea what could be wrong with my XJ12, 1992.
When I apply brakes the steering is shaking. Around 30 mph or above the shaking is quite annoying - also with lower mph - not so much but still. Also braking is strange somehow - brakes works well, it's just that they are "pumping" somehow.
When driving without applying brakes the steering is OK - it goes shaky when brakes are applied. Just the steering wheel - not the wheels.
The funny thing is that I have replaced recently all discs, all brake pads and all shock absorbers - without any improvement... Also rods, joints - all the stuff that is usually the reason for that, were checked today by my mechanic.
"ABS fail" light is sometimes on - when driving, not braking - and stays on for few secs... Could be the reason for that shaking ABS system failure?
Thanks,
Cene

RE: Shaky steering when braking
My knee jerk reaction was warped rotors, but it sounds like you already thought of that.
You may want to check power steering rack mounts. Is this an XJ40 or Series 3 body style? I thought they had only the Series 3 in 92 XJ12. If it's the Series 3 the rack mounts are very possible.
You could have a brake line coming apart internally and giving you some "funky" conditions. (This is a techinal term.)
I would attribute the light to the accumulator ball if on the XJ40 body style.
Just some thoughts.

RE: Shaky steering when braking
Hi, Ken
my mechanic checked today almost everything down there. He suspects front discs - even that they are just few months old. I bought them as a replacement part, not the original - it seems to be a bad idea...
Anyway - I hope that discs are really the reason for my problem - I have already ordered new discs..
My jag is XJ12 series 3 - so I'll ask my mechanic if he checked rack mounts as you suggested.
Thanks for your help,
Cene
