Default SIII Oil Cooler bypass

Any strong opinions for or against it? I was in a pinch yesterday and bypassed it (simple loop), and it seems to be running fine, but is reversible if y'all think there is a danger there.

Also, after I did the job, my dashboard oil pressure gauge stopped working. Might be related or maybe I just bumped something loose. Where is the gauge located at?

Thank you!
Benjamin

Series III XJ6, right?

You should be fine....at least in normal, moderate driving that doesn't tax the engine or cooling system.

Jaguar didn't start installing the oil coolers until about '82 or so. These early cars had two auxiliary fans instead of just one.

I'm sure they had their reasons....but the earlier cars without the coolers seemed to hold up OK.

Cheers

Sending unit for gauge is right down there by the oil filter housing. You probably knocked the wire off it.

Question on oil pressure: to really get at the hoses, I took off the filter, then obviously topped off with oil when I was done. The stick reads full (at the top of the hatch marks). Oil pressure averages at 60. Is this too high, and would removing oil reduce the pressure? Assume my capacity is different after bypassing the cooler so trying to make a judgement based on pressure.

thank you!

No.

1. The volum of oil in the sump relates to pressure only if there is none!!!

2. 60 is just fine, at operating rpm. @K or a bit above. A bit unusual at idle albeit.

3. The stick measures oil level in the sump with the engine at rest. Only residual in the filter and cooler.

No need for angst....

Carl.

Thanks all! Think I’m good here...remembered that I topped it off with 20w50 which may have been heavier than what the previous owner used...based on my understanding that may have contributed to the higher pressure when cold.

The engine was rebuilt a few thousand miles ago...is 20w50 still the way to go, or should I go lighter?

As for my view, stay with the 20/50.
