Default Speedometer issue

Hi all,

The speedometer of my Jag XJ6 S3 1985 stops working after driving for about 20-30 mins. It then starts working next day or after a break of a few hours.

I took these photos. Can anyone advise if I could solder it or would it need replacement?

Thanks,

The visible wiring seems to be intact....except for the insulation, of course. It might be breaking below the surface of the plastic. Remove the transducer and try carving away the plastic for a look see

That said these transducers do fail over time. It might not be related to the wire at all but some other internal fault

Cheers
DD

You can solder it OK, then paint with liquid electrical tape.

One other thing occured to me, The square male drive on the transducer that fits into the female square drive gear in the autobox can after a bit, and if it gets hot, stop being turned by the plastic gear inside the box, which does get worn over time.

So as well as fixing the wires, it would be worth undoing the cover plate clamp, the thing just pulls out to reveal the drive gear, and renewing the drive gear. Just buy one that is the same colour (they are colour coded for various gear ratios) pull out the old one and fit the new one.

This is a bad photo of the assembly:
