Default Speedometer issues

I recently acquired an '87 XJ6 and since I got it the speedometer needle will get stuck at approximately 77 MPH, it wont come back alive until I slow down to around 70 MPH. Just recently the needle started sticking at 0 and popping up to 20.

I changed out the transducer on the transmission this last weekend, it seemed to fix the low end for a couple days but it is back to popping up to 20 now. It never seemed to fix the sticking at 77 issue.

I was wondering if any of you may have an idea as to what may be causing the problem. I am thinking it may be something internal to the speedometer itself.

Welcome to the forum Stephen,

I think you probably have an XJ40 like the one here and not an XJ6 Series III:

Often confusing as both have an XJ6 badge on the back!

Please confirm and I'll move your question to the correct model forum.

It is in fact a Series III XJ6 and not an XJ40

Which is certainly plausible. For most of us that means seeing an instrument specialist or installing a used speedometer

But ....did you install a used transducer? If so, it might have problems of its own, as problems are quite common.

The transducer I installed was a new one. I have a used speedometer on the way from eBay hopefully it fixes it, if not I will try to find a speedometer shop that is willing to take a look at it.

I received the used speedometer over the weekend and tested it out. There seems to be no issues of the needle sticking at this time. I just have to find a speedometer shop that would be willing to adjust to the correct mileage now.

I am kind of OCD when it comes to numbers and I know it is going to bug me that the mileage shown is 50,000+ more than what is actually on the car.

I do doubt I will be able to get it accomplished though
