Default starter run on

Went to start the 87 xj6 and it was sluggish ( i thought do to freezing temps) but the car caught and started. when I turned off the engine i could hear a diffinate motor whirring. The starter seems to be running on with the ingintion off. I dissconnected the neg terminal on battery and when I touch the cable to the terminal i hear a clank, then whirr. I was having rare intermittent issues whith starter making a grinding noise but after a second atempt to start usually no problem. Could this be a case where the starter has landed on a missing tooth on the flywheel and wont dis-engage or is the selinoid stuck in an open position. Have been searching forum but have not found this issue. I'm wondering about manually turning the engine to move the fly wheel to see if that helps or wacking the starter selinoid casing . Any advice is much appreciated
Thanks
Jeff

Yeah, me too. I am there now, I think. Not likely to get after it til Friday at the earliest.

But, a whack might "kick the can down the road a spell".

I am tempted to try that and get mine in the garage. Dry floor, but limited space. too many toys!!!

Did errands in daughter's Passatt today. Kind of a test. Passed, no stalls. No more leaks from heater hose detour seems to have done it. Sprayed on touchy electrics??? Wow, I thought my Jeep had dodads!! but, I have the doors fiqured out, sorta. Peppy little V6. but, the rubber band tires not my cup of tea. Back to the skinny tires of my 23 T!!! That is til I modernized it to 6:00 x 16's!!

The whack technique got me home when the Jeep starter conked away from home!!

Worth a try.

I agree with both teh above.

Also consider that the electrical section of the ignition switch is now OLD, and it is a known problem child.

It may be so grubby inside that the electrickery is tracking between the contacts and holding the starter relay ON.

Of course a good WHACK never hurt anything.

You are quite welcome. Happy New Year to you!!

But, caveat, a limited time fix. there is a problem that will not respond eventually!

I am there!! but, it is too durn cold to change the starter on my car.
