Default Starters, what fits what?

Hi,
My 1970 XJ6 S1 has lost its 2.8 engine, so I will install a 4.2 of similar vintage using the original 2.8 flywheel, transmission and bell housing. I seem to have most of the bits required except the starting motor that got lost by a PO. (Enginewise my car is a bit of a jigsaw puzzle)
Is there any way to use the starter from a 1973 auto trans, which comes with the new engine, or do I need to source the older type (Lucas M45G? The inertia kind) that was on my car originally? Most sources say only this will fit my bell housing. Since the gearing should be the same, Id be willing to modify the new starter casing if possible.

I would fit one of the new High Torque Starters instead of any old type.

Jose, Where would I find one of these starters and do they really make a difference? My ride is an 85 xj-6. Ian

Hi, and yes I have seen the new high torque starters, might be an option if the price is right. Moss has one that they claim fits both E-Type 4.2 Liter, all Series XJ6, 420, 4.2 MKX, and 420G. That would suggest that ANY starter for any of these XK engines/transmissions would be compatible and mesh with the flywheels and bell housings. But in the parts manual, there are two different starters listed for the Series 1 with manual box/OD, and any of the other auto transmissions from the Series cars. Hopefully someone more will chime in who has done the mix and match.

Thanks for the recommendation, Jose. However, when I count the teeth of my flywheel I get 104, which means it is the coarse geared flywheel that also was used on the older saloons. According to this posting I need a 10 tooth starter, Lucas 26140A. So I guess that kind of answers my question why a more modern starter will not fit:

marzipan you can always contact British Starters and explain the issue to see if they have a solution already. Chances are they have had that question before being that they manufacture starters for all classic marques of cars.

Iramphal, member Darren had one fitted to his Series 3 and he swears by it. Not to mention ease of servicing.
