Default Suggestions please....

Hi everyone

In the coming months I am going to have to replace my flexplate as I have little to no teeth left on the old one (I bought it this way), the old starter was bad so with that already replaced I feel confident the new one will be OK....

(87 XJ6)

Anyway back to the reason for the post.

I have decided to pull both the engine and transmission to do the job, why you ask?, well, a previous owner was not really too careful when topping up the master cylinder with fluid and the paint in the engine bay has suffered badly and I'd like to re-paint it, having to replace the flexplate is the excuse I need to get it done. The question I have is what else should I consider doing whilst the engine is out?, I currently have the following but please feel free to add where you think it wise:-

The car only had 80000 original miles

1. Change rear main seal (it leaks), check tensioner/chains and replace where required
2. Take off the sump to have a gander at the bottom end to see how it looks (replace gasket as it leaks)
3. Replace multiple gaskets to fix some more oil leaks
4. Clean and paint engine
5. ??????????????
6. ??????????????

Thanks everyone

Russell

Update the rear crank seal to an XK Unlimited seal kit.
You will need to remove crank and have it machined but will never leak, again.
Acquire a 2" thickness neoprene sheet, for insulating the tranny to tunnel.
Change rack bushings to polyurethane type. Fluid will not degrade those.
Install aluminum radiator.

Thanks for the suggestions, i doubt i'll change the type of seal, mainly down to cost of machining etc, also if i am in there that far i would be inclined replace bearings etc as well.

if the engine is running fine, leave it alone, you will have plenty other opportunities to remove the crankshaft.

8) service the radiator, pressure test it, etc.
9) replace all the vacuum hoses one by one,
9a) replace all the radiator cooling hoses,
10) send the exhaust manifolds and the manifold Heat Shield to Jet-Hot Coatings,

With engine out it's a good opportunity to change the rack bushings, subframe bushes and replace any leaky hoses. The master cylinders usually leaks out the rear seal and the fluid drips out of the weep hole in the booster, so it may be time for a new master.
