all I know is that Series 3 came with a little crank tool that lets you manually crank/turn the motor from the boot if the motor should fail. Some came with the tool in the glove box, some came with the tool in the boot, at least in the USA they did.

not very familiar with the '78 Coupe. But if no other experienced tips come forth, then I would ((as a last resort)), disconnect the geared cables from the sunroof motor assuming you don't have to remove the headliner to get access to the sunroof motor. Once the cables are removed from the motor's toothed gear, the sunroof should be freer to move.

you welcome wiggy, glad to hear the news, it almost sounds as if the '78 Coupe motor is the same as in the Series 3 all the way to 1992, so you could try a Series 3 sunroof motor, or have yours rebuilt.

are you in the USA? if yes, I know a rebuilder in Maryland, but I think you can find a used motor for less than it costs to rebuild it. Have you checked eBaY for a used motor??
also check with David at Everyday XJ he has Series 2 and 3 parts.

Default Series II sunroof motor

There is a series II sunroof motor on ebay auction # 310036490473 with picture and part # which might be helpful for around $75.00 . I would test the old one first to make sure it's not just the switch which was my problem.. A new switch is arond $15.00. You can test the switch by repacing it with one of the identical switches that you know works.. A shot of electrical parts cleaner on the connections seemed to help as well..

You do not need a special tool just in case you lost yours.
A shifter will do the job.
On my Sun roof electrical motor there are two rollers which you can rotate manually forward and backwards to control the geared cable.
Now can anybody help me in outlining the steps in removing the whole sun roof structure from the underside the roof without using a grinder?
I really do not want the use my angle grinder and cut around the sunroof structure.
Where the S/R sits up front it is penned and glued whilst at the rear it is loose.
