They're Tee'd together, Carl, but I think there's a back flow valve in there somewhere, probably a couple of them, because the tanks do Not drain equally. I usually put around 8 gallons in the left tank and 2 gallons in the right tank. Not only that, no matter how long it sits, the tanks don't equalize.

The engine draws off the left tank first until it's well below 1/4 and I'm getting Really Nervous, but then the gauge doesn't drop anymore and she just keeps going and going and going, obviously drawing from the right tank.

I calculated I have a range of over 400 miles anyway, but mostly because it's not right, I would like the gauge to work.

At times plumbing mysteries equal electrical issues.

If the Tee is a simple connecting the low points of each tank, one would think they would equalize via the Tee.

And, as a carb car, no electric pump and return lines. Simple, or should be.

But, a back flow preventer in each line to the Tee? Sounds really clever.

But, how the logic is constructed to feed from the right tank til it is empty than the left is unkown. More clever work?

So, in effect, your right tank is the service tank and the left functions as a reserve.
Not bad at all.

And, the way to read each tank went with the individual fuel pumps, as when it was a carb'd DOHC!

I suppose the float and rheostat is still in the left tank. perhaps the wires are cut and taped off. or merely an open of unknown etiology.
