Default Thermostat location

Can somebody tell me where the thermostat is located in a series 3? Car never hits halfway on temp and stays a little under the green zone. The heat works but blows luke warm when on the highest setting. Im thinking its the thermostat stuck open. Can it be the CTS? The temp gauge never bounces it stays steady a little under halfway. I checked and there is no leaks and the coolant level never lowers. Any suggestions? Sometimes although the gauge will hit halfway but never stay there long at all

Follow the the TOP radiator hose, RH side of the engine near the top, to where it connects to an alloy housing ON the engine front. The "snout" of that housing holds the thermostat. There are 3 bolts, and one is LONG, and a mongrel usually to remove, so take care and do not break it.

Picture is the Damler Limo version, basically identical.

front of radiator, follow the top radiator Hose until it reaches the front of the engine, towards the passenger side. (see yellow arrow in picture)

once you separate the Hose at the engine side, there is a steel housing with nuts;

if you can remove the nuts without breaking the studs, then you pry the housing and under the housing you will see the thermostat. Observe the orientation before removing it, the new one goes in one-way only.

if you break one of the studs while trying to remove the thermostat housing nuts, you are in big trouble, so be very careful. Spray RustBlaster or ******** on all the nuts for a few days before attempting to loosen the nuts. It is a known issue that the studs break when you put a wrench to them. You are warned.

the alternative is to take the car to an experienced Jaguar mechanic and let him/her do the job.

Also there are two different temperature thermostats, make sure you buy the correct temperature thermostat for the region where you live. Go to a Jaguar Dealer, do not install a cheap aftermarket thermostat, these cars don't like cheap thermostats.

One picture of the housing in place, the second with it removed.
The S3 looks similar except for the tank in front of it in the books I have.

I have both, the Northern Climate and the Southern climate thermostats, because I spend time in Tennessee and Florida, depending on the Season, so I just change to the Northern thermostat if I'm going to spend Winter in Tennessee, or change to the Southern thermostat if I'm spending time in Florida.

one opens faster than the other, the northern t/s opens later to allow the engine to heat more.

the Jaguar dealer will know, I don't have the part numbers.

If you get the bolts out without much drama, I would carefully chase the threads with a bottom tap, blow them out well, clean the bolts well on a wire wheel and use never seize on the bolts going back. Next time will be easy...

Perhaps also replacing that long bolt with a "Grade 8" unit could be helpful the next time it's removed.
