Exclamation thinking of buying a XJS v12

Hi I am in the throws of negotiating a trade with a gentleman for a 1988(87 styling) XJS V12 Vanden Plas. I get the Jag, he gets a 1967 MGB GT. I have a couple of questions - the V12 seems to misfire a bit, and interior seems hot. I will be going to visit him for a 2nd viewing and a more serious inspection of the V12. Are there any points I need to consider? It is rust free, has had only 10ooo km put on it in the last 10 yrs. It has 118000 km on it now. Interior is good, abit of wear on the driver's seat, some cracking on the dash wood finish. The more serious mechanicals I have yet to inspect.. Your advice is greatly appreciated. Roland

I have nothing to contribute, other than pointing you to the correct forum section.

Good luck, hope you get a car that makes you happy!

He mentions "Vanden Plas" so he may need to clarify.

The XJS is the 2 door, 2+2 from this time period.
The XJ12 (don't know if they called them Vanden Plas), is the 4 door, full size sedan.

Which one are you looking at?

The V12 is the same engine in either car, although there are far more V12 XJS's than V12 XJ-sedans. Either way, I've got the straight 6 so I can't help you much there. Sorry.

Back in the 80s the XJS and the Ser III V12 saloon/sedan had almost everything in common (brakes, engine, transmission, suspension, differential, climate control) so, except the body shell, the XJ6/XJ12 Buyer's Guide thread will provide some good basic info. One of the postings contains the full text of the guide.

Cheers

Roland is the car a 2 door or a 4 door? If its a 4 door then you are in the right section.

Jaguar continued production of the XJ12 up until 1992 with the series 3 body style, however in the American market we didnt get the XJ12's and the last cars were 87's, however since you are from Canada, Im not sure if Jaguar sold XJ12's in Canada. From the sound of things you have the XJ12 not the XJS because you mention Vanden Plas which was a name that only the saloons received.

As Doug was saying check out the XJ6/12 Buyers Guide and take a look through the forums for both the XJ6/12 and the XJS (since the XJS had the same 5.3 V12)

Cant wait to see pictures!!

Cheers,
Alex

Thanks Alex. Indeed it is a V12 Vanden Plas, 1988 at that. The deal is still pending as the current owner mentioned that he wouldn't be making a decision until month end. Thanks for the information gentlemen..

It's a grey finish. Here's what the owner accurately described in the ad -

1988 Jaguar V12 sedan 4 door, excellent condition, all records, recent front brakes, rotors, up-graded fan, 3 speed auto, just glides along.sell or trade for something interesting, "Land Rover", this car runs great, no rust
