Default Timing xj6 s2

Okay humour me, jag s2 4.2 1975 ....which cylinder do we do ignition timing off...I put the strobe on number six (front) and got nothing. Timing mark is in white paint. 8 degrees. So I should put the strobe on number 1 (back)?

No 1 cylinder is nearest the firewall (e.g. at the back of the engine), you need to time off that cylinder - yes, it's a Jaguar thing.

Hi, I would check your strobe light and/or the plug lead. It won’t make any difference if you time it on no 1 or no 6 assuming you have a running engine . Timing on the compression stroke of the rear (no 1 piston) is only required when the head has been off and you are setting the camshafts and distributor. Good luck.
