can someone advise me on tires. My local tire store doesn't seem to be able to locate the correct v rated tires for my 88 xj12 . Any particular places to look? It may be worth my while to travel to Seattle.

You're right that V-rated tires are hard to come by in a 15" wheel diameter. "V" is a tire rated to 149mph. Do you really need this? Much discussion has been done in the past on this. I run Goodyear Assurance Comfortread on my car which are rated "T" or 118 MPH. Does this mean it's not safe to run to, say 125 MPH for a few minutes? Not really. These ratings are for 'sustained' MPH.

Choose a tire that suits your driving style and comfort requirements. Speed ratings are only there if you are looking to exceed them.

PS: Comfortreads are NOT a good choice for the XJ. They are too soft and feel very unstable in a heavy car like this.

 

I agree wirh Dr. D on the speed rating thing. However, you might find a V-rating if you look for a 225/60x15 or 215/65x15. The 225 is a wee bit fate for the Jaguar 6" wide wheel but it'll be OK.

The V-rated tires have a stronger casing and stiffer sidewalls so downgrading means a softer feel to the steering, generally speaking. If you drive gently it won't matter much.

Don't compromise on weight rating, though. You want at least a 97 weight/load rating.
