Transmission Question

I read on a website that you can downshift the cable to reduce hard shifts, i have a 82 xj6 series 3 and not really sure what this means. Can anyone clarify this? Thanks

Downshift cable should be adjusted using a pressure gauge. This will affect the shift points and quality.
