Default trip computer

I have a 87 xj6 (16 yrs now). The trip computer works fine, but when I turn the ignition off, it loses all programing...time etc. When I turn the ignition back on, I have to reset again. Any ideas for a cure??

It sounds like it is losing the constant 12 volt power supply. Check the fuses....which includes making sure the contacts are not corroded. The fuse you're after is probably #7 in the LH fuse box

Or......

Sometimes just disconnecting and reconnecting the wiring plugs at the TC will restore correct operation. Give it a try. If proper operation returns it suggests a poor connection at the plug-ins.

Or the TC itself might be failing. I had a slew of dead or partially dead TCs which I eventually tossed out. Across the automotive hobby we can see many examples of 80s-90s vintage electronics beginning to fail. Most commonly, solder joints on the circuit boards fail.

Cheers

I also suspected loss of positive power when ignition is off. Do you happen to know which wire provides that power. Fuses all look good.
Thanks for the suggestions.

I was pleased that my TC worked again after all the contacts were cleaned up.

This is what you need:

More:

Glass fuses may look good, but be open inside. Use a meter for continuity or a test lamp.

And, at times, merely rolling them in the cradle returns function.
