Default Tyres: 205/70/VR15

These tyres are expensive now as they are not being manufactured by the major companies anymore. I need to buy a new Pirelli and spend over £200.
These V rated tyres are for speeds up to 149mph. I have been offered new Pirellis 205/70/HR15 for £63.40. These H ratings are for speeds up to 130mph. The fastest I ever drive my 30 year old XJ6 is 80mph. I am wondering if I am wrong to consider the cheaper and 130 mph rated tyre. I would welcome thoughts from our members. Kind regards, Danny.

Default What are the rules in your country?

If you have to maintain the OEM speed rating, then you have no choice. I would go with the lower rated tires...if able to legally

In the USA we do not have those crazy annual MOT inspections, only smog every year or two depending on the cars age.

There would never be enough places and people to do annual car inspections with the huge number of vehicles and population we have... thank goodness.

stick with the HR rated tires, the XJ-6 does not need VR rated tires. Waste of money, like filling up with 93 octane fuel when the car will run efficiently with 87 octane.

Agree:

My cars are shod with the tires that meet my driving habbits. T for the Jaguar.
sustained driving over 112 mph, I don't think so.

Gnarly off road for the Jeep? Same logic, it got touring tires. just fine.

It just happened that the original Dunlops had a V rating. Up to that point all the Jaguar saloons used tyres of H rating, and the proposed H rated Pirellis will do perfectly well. I cannot believe an MOT tester nowadays will even know what the original fitment ever was. Other thing is that these V rated Dunlops would have been developed before the 70 mph speed limit came in.
