Ok so for anyone that followed my rear deck speaker upgrade, i have upgraded what i put in there, one of the polk audio speakers took to rattling at higher volumes, so i decided to bite the bullet and replace the 6.5 inch subs with something a bit more able to handle the amp.
They were still pretty cheap, think i paid 40 bucks each, (been sitting in trunk for a while now, other stuff was more pressing)
Its still not one of those awful boom boom stereos, but will certainly do the job and its all still pretty low profile.

AWESOME! I wish I could do this. I almost did but in New Zealand we are not allowed to make new holes of that size in our body panels
Nice place for the tweeters too. Very tidy.
All those little door speakers just don't cut it :P I've got a 12" sub in the trunk to help but I really need some midrange speakers in the passenger compartment.
Do you know if there was ever any series 3s that came from factory with speakers installed in those recessed circles? It's almost like they were meant to have speakers in there!
One again, AWESOME!

Outside diameter of the door speakers is 5 inches. The original door speakers are hexagonal so I measured from point to point on the hex which is 5 inches. Your 5 1/4 inch speaker will be a tight fit in the speaker housing, but should work. I purchased my speakers from Crutchfield and the 5 inch fit perfectly. I am running 8 speakers. Four in the doors, two 6x9 speakers at the back where Darren has his, and I moved around the wiring that goes to the doors in the front foot well and installed two Sony 3x5 two way speakers there.

Do you recall the make/model of the 5" speakers you used in the doors? I looked at some options and ended up going with new 4" speakers which matched the stock size.
Although there seems to be sufficient depth in the door to mount a 5" or 5 1/4" speaker, the problem seemed to be how to use the stock door baffle (the black plastic part that holds the speaker to the door panel) on anything larger than the stock size. Mine is a base XJ6, not VDP which has a slightly different speaker setup in the door panels.
Thanks

I put 5 1/4 speakers in my doors, was a bit of a pain but i got it to work.
After removing old speakers, i got a.set of the chrome surrounds and reattched them to the speaker cups, (or whatever you want to call the plastic cup thing that hold the speaker) i then used nail snips and cut off excess threads.
The speakers had those little ears to.use to mount with, i ground those off, and the speaker slid right into the cup, all the way to the bottom! I then ran a bead of black polyurethane around egde of speaker and let it cure. Worked just fine, if speakers ever go bad all i need is an exacto knife to get it out.

Tis not the size of the speaker, but the brand of speaker together with your stereo system.
For the doors I used JBL GT7-5 with a top mount depth of 2 5/16. The door baffle together with the plastic mount makes up the whole enclosure for the speaker.
The reason for the 2 5/16 mount depth is so when you mount it inside the plastic holder the base (magnet) of the speaker does not touch the baffle inside the door. The air space inside the door completes the whole shebang.
@ Jose: yes there is a recessed area on both sides of the parcel shelf in the back. It does look as if it was designed for a 8 inch speaker. One can drill many little holes in that area and install the speakers from the trunk side. I opted to cut mine to install my 6x9s from the top. I will post a pic of that and my other installed speakers.

Everywhere i looked the census was that the door speakers are the either 4 or 4 and 1/2, dont recall as its been a while, the issue with that is indeed the speaker size as due to the mounting ears it uses, that do indeed fit the bolts for the jag, it does not seal to anything so back of speaker is.not seperated from the front and you then get the tinny sound ! Mine sounds great now even when amp is off, which it did not when i had the 4 inch ones.

Thanks for the info guys. my car still has the original speakers, and they sound best when loud, and I like it loud. One day I will remove the door panel and measure them, but at least the grille size is larger than a 4 inch speaker, from the outside it measures 5.25 inches. Mine do not have the chromed ring on the face of the grille. By the way, the Series 3 cars have holes where the Series 2 cars had a fresh air vent, at each front kick panel. I always wonder if I could get a 8 or 10 inch woofer there.

@ Jose: No you can't get a speaker that big in there. Remove the kick panels from both sides and you would see a mass of wires and its really not that deep. I was just able to push the wires to one side and secure them with plastic harness clips to gain enough space for my 3x5 speaker without having to cut any metal there. I then drilled holes in the kick panel about 30 holes in the shape of the speaker and installed the speaker grill. Tomorrow will post pics.
@ Darrenmb: the speaker cone is exactly 4 and 1/8 inch so we would say 4 inch. Since we are dealing with the limited space on the Jaguar, the speaker measurement has to be the overall dimensions, depth being the most critical. Different manufacturers have the same size speaker cone but the overall dimensions will vary. Did a lot of research before I made my purchases.

Got it Sanchez, in the pre-XJ models like the S type and the 420, the kick panels have a almost 8 inch round hole that perfectly fits 7 inch, 2-way speakers made by Clarion. Also my S type came from the factory with removable cutouts at the rear parcel shelf for 5 x 7 speakers. Funny that in 1965, Jaguar was already anticipating 6-speaker sound systems.
