Default Vacuum Solonoid Valve

Thought it would be proper to start its own thread so as to not get off topic on the 3-D printer.

I googled this, but they didn't look exactly like Jeff's:

In the interest of keeping everything together, below is the information I posted elsewhere on using the solenoid valve to control the hot water flow to the heater coil.

There seem to be lots of choices on the internet but they don't seem to be clear on if they are normally open or closed. Either way you can make it work. Just be sure to get 12v DC.

The stock heater valve is open pretty much all the time so hot water is circulating through the coil. It is controlled by a pneumatic signal from the Delanaire system and closes on rare occasions (I forget why).

So you just disconnect and plug the pneumatic line from the Delanaire system and install a simple pneumatic solenoid valve actuated by 12v. The one I got was on Amazon and was about $10. It has a normally open port and a normally closed port.

I forget if the vacuum to heater valve opens it or closes it. Just start your car and pull the tube at the heater valve and you can quickly determine if vacuum opens it or closes it. I then just ran a new vacuum line from the engine into the appropriate port of the solenoid valve and from there to the valve. A toggle switch inside the car now provides full or no vacuum to the heater valve thus controlling it.

Does, or could shutting off all flow through the heater matrix result in any coolant flow issues in the rest of the system? ie. a hot spot somewhere.

I'm not an expert on the cooling system but I doubt there would be any adverse effects for two reasons.
1) with maximum a/c in the hot weather the flaps in the Delanaire box are such that no air is going through the heater matrix, thus there is no heat transfer .
2) the Delanaire system does shut off water flow in certain situations so the system is designed for no water flow through the matrix.

I installed the valve on my 79 which has a GM V8 and it certainly doesn't mind. An original 6 cylinder may be different. Like every good XJ6 owner we should keep one eye on the temperature guage. If there is some adverse effect it only cost you less than $15 and maybe 20 minutes so it is easy to reverse the procedure.

Apologies for a bit of a 'thread hop". New word for hihack!! but lessor in meaning.

My lump is ill! Son was over. during the search for the "no crank" issue, he came across two Dellanair stuff.

1. A spliced and crinkled line from the "one way" valve to the intake manifold. Fixed.
A PO, not me did an odd splice!!

2. The one way valve and the exhaust manifold came in to contact. Partly cooked !!
Now, each way!!

So, now what ?

Vacum leak?
Odd heater function. Not that any is needed now!!

Present priority is the "no crank" Battery, starter, back feed or some of each???

Carl
