VDP telescoping stopped

The telescoping of the steering column suddenly stopped. When inserting (or removing) the key, the motor runs, and you can hear the gears, but there's no motion of the column. It does move up and down fine.
It sounds (to me) as though a gear is out of place and they're, therefore, missing each other?
Any suggestions on how to resolve ... I can drive it with the column that close to the dash, but wife can't ... and it's her car, LOL

More than likely the reach motor assembly went south. You can download the JTIS application and it will give you an idea of what to replace. Even though it covers the 1998-2003 XJs you should be able to use it in this case. You should be able to access the reach motor assembly by moving the steering wheel column all the way down and removing the column covers and the knee bolsters. You may want to try the various Jag salvage sites for the part.

If you hear the motor run but get no action, the drive cable is probably twisted off. Until recently the motor and cable were always sold as an assembly but Coventry West (800 331 2193) sells the drive cable separately
