VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) Stamp On Engine
Hello Folks,
I have a Series III XJ12. Does anybody know where I can find the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) stamp on the actual motor of the car itself? I paid somebody to swap out a different motor for me because the original had a blown head gasket. I had a friend check out the new motor recently because of a major coolant leak and this new motor has a blown head gasket as well.
I want to compare the VIN stamp on the new motor with that of the car itself. I am wondering if the motor was ever changed to begin with...
Thank you!

We'll wait for others to verify but I'm 99% that Jaguar never stamped engines with the car's VIN or even portion of the VIN. There is an engine number, though.
However, you could get a Heritage Certificate from Jaguar which shows the *original engine number* . From there you can obviously tell if the engine has been swapped

Doug is correct, there is no VIN number on the engine, VIN refers to Vehicle Identification Number, i.e., the car itself, with all its assemblies together as it left the assembly line under its own power.
there is a Engine Number on the engine itself, as well as a Cylinder Head Number on the cylinder head, (well at least in older Jaguars there was a cylinder head number).
the engine number is located on the right side of the block, towards the rear, towards the bottom, above the oil filter head on the block "lip" where the oil pan is bolted to.

Wowee, the "mother of all wall jobs" !!! Throw in some Kwik seal or other snake oil.
Charge for swap. Hope it works????
Aside from the numbers, I wonder if you might recognize your "old" motor as still residing in the bay. Some individuality. In my case, a dent in the sump[!!!

I wish I took some photos of the motor before sending it in for the swap. I sent the car in shortly after purchasing it. The Lucas control unit sticker reminds me of the one in the old motor (scratching on sticker), but I can't prove that or be certain without a photo of the old motor.
