Default What tires (Brand, Model) are you using these days?

It's getting time for me to put new times on my '84 VDP, and it's getting tough to find them. My go-tos were Michelins but so far they seem to be discontinued in the 205/70 or 215/70 R15s I need.

Someone recommended Pirelli P4000s but they appear to be unobtainium as well.

What are you using on your XJs? Size, brand, model (if you know)? How do you like them?

I am using 225/60/15 size in my 1984 XJ-6. Fat, all-weather tires, not the 70 width which are too Tall for my taste.
Found them at Walmart in the US for a decent price. They fit fine, no issues with clearance and the handling is like glue, the 225 /60 also lowers the body which I like.

My opinion is that Michelin are too stiff, and Pirelli are not good in rain. Both are also too expensive. I've dealt with both brands since 1970. Gave up on Pirelli years ago.

My favorite tires were Dunlop Sport 235/60/15 which I got in the 1990s. But no longer made.

My car came to me with 215/60/15 Michelins, still had rubber whiskers from the molds. But they were TEN YEARS OLD and failed me on a curve at 70mph within 2 months of Nix coming to live with me. Couldn't find any newer ones in my preferred size so I went Online and found some good rated ones at Tire Rack, and had them installed by the World Famous Tire Shop down the road.

Brand is Raptor (made by GOK in WKW), 215/60/15. They're quite adequate for my driving style (hard, fast and addicted to cornering Gs!).

Like Jose, I do Not like 70 series tires on my car, they look like high water pants, even thought that's what she rolled out of factory wearing. Poor thing!!

1985 XJ-6 Sovereign - Yokohama AVID Ascend LX - 205/70/15. No sagging suspension new springs/shocks 1 year old. I get ground to middle of fender heights of 26.5" front and 24" rear.
I like the stance and the visual height. The ride is silent and smooth. Grip is great in the dry, but I don't thrash the car. As my car never goes out on a wet day, I cannot comment on the wet weather performance. The upgrade to a 7/8" anti-roll bar and poly mounts made a noticable difference in ride and handling quality. My two cents! Ian

Hi Elinor, 215/60/15 not a lot different than my 225/60/15.
Those sizes give the XJ-6 an elegant "cat on the prowl" stance, which is probably why everybody wants to park next to our cars.

And we use the same "Teardrop" XJ40 wheels in our cars.

I'm running Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring, 215/65x15, H-speed rating, on 6.5" wide wheels.

No complaints. I'm perfectly happy with them in all respects

Cheers

the Best tyres currently for the XJ range is the Pirelli Cinturato P5. if you look at the "Jaguar classic tyre test" you will see that both the CN12 and P5 Cinturato tyres are the best 2 tyres in the test. However it is done on an earlier none power steering car. better suited to the CN12. However the P5 is the tyre Jaguar designed for the XJ.

The P4000 are long gone an now all too old to be safe on the road

Best tire for the car or best tire for the owner? The best tire buying decisions are made after considering anticipated driving conditions, amount of use over time, owner priorities, etc. And, of course, price. A wise person weighs all the factors and then makes a decision.

Personally, I think the P5s are cool. But the price ($400+ each) will drive many potential buyers away. Including me :-)

Interestingly, P5s are available in 215/60/15, or were when I looked, but for $1600++ I can buy a Lot of gas!

Im running cooper evolutions, been great until two weekends ago!!! Came out of salon after getting a pedicure with my wife!!( Yes im not afraid of my feminine side!! lol it’s actually great, they do a better job of cutting my toe nails than I do! Haven’t made a hole in a sock since I started going. Anyways, i digress…. Back to the topic at hand, ). Had a flat, swapped it out and went home, no puncture found, I’m thinking either some punk kid let air out or it got a little low and seal at rim let it go! Took me a few tries to get seated on rim again, but no issues since! The coppers ride nice and grip really well with the power I’m putting down!!!

Darren. Kids ? I doubt it. Probably a leaker valve.

lately I can't even bend down to reach my toe nails.

I bet the Pirelli testing was done on a dry road. And they wear quickly. Michelin last a long time because the rubber is so stiff.
For what they cost, I prefer the Tiger Paws. Save the money !

Wondering if you have a pic of this size on your vehicle?

I do, but can't find a way to upload pics from my phone to this forum, and my computer (which lets me), is disabled.

If someone understands why THIS forum doesn't let me upload pictures from my Android, let me know.

Agree Jose, I miss those dunlops. Had them on my 635 and XJC. Anything now including premiums are engineered to last about three years before the rubber dries out and weather checks. I'd rather be disappointed by a cheaper set of tire (some are pretty good, hankook, Riken, nitto etc...) even the Hankooks handle pretty good, I have them in Ventus 245/50/16 on the xjc now.
