Default Whining BW 66

Hello,

I bought a donor vehicle for my series 1. It's a Jaguar XJ6 Souvereign from 1984. I've driven it for 200 miles after it sat for 6 months.

The whining is coming from the torque convertor (area). The manual tells me to inspect the pump gears and convertor nose bush. Thought I'd ask if anyone has experience before I do anything.

I'd like to drive this car first to test if everything is working properly. The plan is to swap the subframes, engine and transmission but first get a fresh MOT for 2 years so it's not just a wreck and I have the option to sell it if I have to. Would like to keep it on the road but it's chugging petrol.

Thanks

I agree with the manual although I'd add that the torque converter itself ...rather than just the nose bushing....can create a whine if it is beginning to fail

Generally speaking but not always, if its the torque converter, the noise goes away in park and neutral.

Thanks Doug. I do have another torque converter. If it's the pump, can I move over the pump on my other transmission, or can I fix the pump or would the transmission be scrap if the pump is bad?

Well the noise also happens when the car is in P. So, can I swap over a pump or is that a specialist job?

The pump and converter should be DIY but I'd want to review the process in the shop manual before getting too deep.

IMHO a noisy pump (or converter), in and of itself, doesn't *necessarily* condemn the trans to the scrap pile.

Problem is, a noisy pump or converter often results in (or is the result of) metallic particles circulating throughout the trans. That's bad, obviously

An experienced trans specialist would know what to look for to make the 'scrap' or 'not scrap' determination.

Cheers
