Default Series 2 front discs on series 1 xj6?

Does anyone know if i bought xj6 series 2 vented front brake rotors could i put them on my series 1 xj6? Could you use a spacer in between both sides of the calipers to give more room for the extra width of a vented disc like people do for the rear brakes. Thanks

Dont use a spacer. Get a complete series 3 spindle. There a numerous design imporvements and the whole spindle is a bolt on.

Matt I think he's referring to the hub...as in spindle hub.

The complete spindle is everything between the upper ball joint and lower ball joint.

Yes my series 1 has calipers with 4 pistons and vented discs, much better. Brakes are good.

Does the master cylinder need changing or will the series 1 master cylinder work fine with the series 3 calipers? And one last question and i'll leave you in peace. Is the rear brakes on non abs xj6 series 1,2 and 3 the same? Calipers and rotors? Thanks again you have been very helpful.

I did think they're all the same, but Series 3 shows different part numbers. AFAIK the Series 1 & 2 are interchangeable, but this is Jaguar ! Much may depend on when changeovers were made, it could be partway through Series 2 production.

Master Cyl doesn't need changing, the bore size was the same (15/16ths) from 69 XJ all the way to the late 80's. Series 1 and 2 have remote reservoir. You can upgrade to a series 3 master if you want to do away with the remote reservoir and have better availability of parts.

The Only XJ Series 3 to ever have ABS was the 90's XJ12, those are rare and I've never seen one in the flesh. As for the rear brakes there are many differences from series 1, 2 and 3 relating to how the caliper mounts to the diff and routing of the pressure lines and how the exhaust hangs. Size and effectiveness is all the same until Jaguar changed to rear outboard brakes on the last few years of XJS. That setup is drastically changed for ease of maintenance, cooling and braking force.
