Speedometre Nut
here's an odd one,
the speedo cable from the dash of the 1974 car meets the auto-transmission also from a 74 car BUT
while the core cable goes into the port
the outer nut to hold it on is the wrong size
the nut on the cable is much smaller than the bigger threaded connection on the trans both have thread, so what am I needing to make play?

um, don't think so.
i will check.
i know some speedos are mechanical and some electrical but thought a body and a motor of the same year should be the same, maybe not.
the bolt on the cable is about 8 or 9 mm while the transmission fitting is 20mm
i have an securing nut that was taken from a series3 speedo cable and it is 20mm and fits the transmission, so assume i need a stepping bolt

actually c24589 looks to have 9mm at cable side and 20mm at other appx.
as I can see and feel the socket and attach the series3 bolt to it I guess that I don't have one of those ... is it required for a mechanical speedo? assuming that is what the transmission has?

The angle drives were often used in tight quarter to get the cable headed off in the right direction when there isn't enough room to accommodate curving the cable...as they can't tolerate a tight radius bend
In some cases...not sure about Jaguar....the angle drive also has overdrive/underdrive gearing to adjust speedo readings

BTW...
Electric speedos came along in 1983 or so on the Series III cars. On those a signal generator...'transducer'....screwed onto the transmission just like a speedo cable does...but no angle drive, though
Cheers

talked to a local jag mechanic and sent him a picture of the transmission and mentioned the part above, he agreed that i do need this angle part and he does them for $50.

Hey all, hopefully This isn't a thread hijack :/ I'm Currently messing with my speedo too. Does anyone's 90 degree at the trans end of the cable have a bit of a wiggle? Mine wiggles maybe 3mm in the trans. My speedo just stopped working so I've been investigating. I can make the speedo move by rotating the cable under the car, and not from the dash, which seems to be right to me. Maybe one of you have come across this while working on your speedo.
Harry, maybe it's coming loose from the trans housing. Mine isn't tight (that wiggle you speak of), and there's no way to tighten it without pulling the whole engine/transmission to fix it (I don't think it's been right for the last 30 years, since conversion). It was so loose that the nut end of the sheath broke off the cable, as I mentioned yesterday in another thread here.
I'm thinking none of these parts should be wiggly loose.

speedo cable under the car from dash gauge with 9mm neck bolt.
Aden, your retaining nut and speedo cable have indeed parted ways. This is Exactly what my speedo cable looked like, except that I already have the 90 degree adapter and it came apart anyway, probably because it was never properly installed.
The cable is Supposed to have a retaining collar on the end to prevent the nut from falling off and the cable from disengaging the drive in the trans. Excess length has doubtless caused that collar to wear off, allowing the cable to fall out, but had it been properly tight to begin with it shouldn't have had this problem.
DRAT, I wish I had taken some pictures when I had my car jacked up to fix mine. I could send 50,000 words and not explain it as well as one picture.
Maybe your transmission guy has some ideas how to fix yours.

If you squeeze it a little bit out of round, it will stay on much better. Whenever I am under my car I try to tighten it a little with locking pliers...

Back story: My ladies wart got stolen and written off so of course I gave her mine, now I walk. I figured this would be extra motivation to finish my Jag :P
What is this, Wart season or something?!?! You wouldn't think somebody would actually STEAL one!
I'm sorry this has happened to your household, Harry, but as you say, you are now Motivated to finish your Jag!
That's not such a bad thing, is it?
