Re:Xj40,
Blocky in form is fine with me, I grew up with such "square" cars, but not with the result of Homeliness.

There's an Xj40 across the street from the Post Office that I see nearly every day for 11 years. It's slowly becoming another blight on the landscape; today another bashed fender, last week a broken tail light, the month before that a broken rear door window, not seen to move (lashed down by spiders) for 3 years before that.

Nix wouldn't want it to be known they're even in the same species let alone the same family!

On the other hand, up until last Summer there was an Excellent example (if there is such a thing), a RED (that's what got my attention) Xj40 regularly seen at my favorite Super Mart in town; driven, probably by the Original Owners.

They (old, grey, crotchety and crabby) were Not impressed by my attention to the car. It WAS a Jag after all, and I was just trying to be friendly in spite of the car's inherent Ugliness.

I'm waiting for X350s to hit the bottom of their depreciation curve, as I love the aluminium body, & having the last of that shape would compliment my S3 nicely. Like my modern S-Type compliments my classic. Though in that case the modern car's just a tribute to the earlier car, with nothing in common between them, except a vague resemblance in the shape. Whereas the X350 is an evolutionary development of the XJ 6 that has an unbroken lineage all the way back to 1968. Although the end result is the same, & there's little in common between the early cars & an X350, other than the shape.

The "G" rego makes it somewhere around late 96" to 98" if it has the original plates.

Fleet management guidelines require one vehicle out for each vehicle in

We see accumulators in our club who end up not being able to maintain and use their cars. I am trying to learn from their experience :-)

I have been thinking of selling my 635 (despite protests from wife) but not sure what I would do next

This is wisdom. I need it tattooed backwards on my forehead, so I'll read it every day when I look in the mirror.

This one I have been watching just sold today. The guy had it for sale at last years ABD for $30,000.
Would love to know how much it actually sold for.

After Nix gets new heads and exhaust, the next time someone asks what I'd take for her I'm gonna say, "$18K and not a penny less." (The last time someone asked, I said, "Oh, maybe $10" and I could see the wheels churning in the crowd, who could actually come up with that kind if cash.)

If they fork over 18 big ones, fine. They've put their money where their mouth is and they can drive her away with this inch-thick folder of paperwork and all the relevant books and repair manuals. If they don't (I think I'm pretty safe here), then I'll continue to drive the wheels off her.

1. Looking at Sarc's gorgeous XJ40, I see more interest. Upper left, across from Sarc, a mid 50's Ford pickup. I've always had a weakness for them.
2. 95 Buick Roadmaster. Slick. My car is powered by an engine and transmission for it's cousin, in my case, 94 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham.
3. 27 Chevrolet. Very interesting cars. Circa 1948 a school chum's family sedan was an immaculate green and black 27 Chevrolet sedan. Decades later, I saw a "contraption for sale. @K, as I recall. The bones of a 27 on 16"' Chevrolet pickup wheels and sporting a fibre glass 27 T Ford Roadster body. Weird, but nicely done, very tempting. Wifey woulda'..... Too many critters here at the time...

4. One of the back roads I use occasionly takes me past an XJ40 in a drive. Not driven and a t times with a tarp. I wonder if it might just be a desirable V12!!!

That makes two of us! I can't imagine he got anywhere near that.

Especially when there's a V12 just above it for 1/5th of the price! Even if it needs a full rebuild, $20k buys a lot of love!

Check out Lou Guthry's latest SIII offering!

I've mentioned this Melbourne dealer before, he's a well known specialist purveyor of used/classic Jags (I have no affiliation with him, never met him, he advertises in the monthly JCCV mag).

The last series 1 that was advertised for $25k sold for $18k to a forum member, but it had $50k resto done.(the buyer was not a hands on type, so a good car for him)

The white one was apparently refreshed by Mike Roddy Motors.

As for the XJ12, I've been watching it. Usually any S1-S3 between Coffs Harbour and Bundaberg are on my watch list, and any bikes that catch my eye too.

Nice car, probably $3-4K overpriced, but that's Dealers for you. I'm pleased to see well sorted cars fetching a premium price. By the time I get my car on the road again I'll be into it for around $12-13K, which I never thought I'd recover this side f 2020, or later. But my Wrench is doing such a thorough job of sorting her out (definitely more than a quick engine swap), she'll be one of the better S3s in Nth Qld. I still think I'd struggle to get my money back (Jags aren't that popular up here), & I've no intention of testing that out, as I intend to drive the wheels off her, for many years to come (well into the 2020s). & I'm definitely giving my 64 S-Type to this Wrench, as she needs a big dose of fastidiousness too, & he's definitely the man to give it to her. Though I don't expect to get her back on the road before New Year. My S3 on the other hand, is getting very close, & I'm looking forward to taking her for a long run down to the Gold Coast in July, to see my Daughter deliver her first university lecture.

I must say that I find $25K high for any XJ6. Not denigrating the model, but so many were made, no rarity, and many excellent examples still around. Like Gary, would I buy the Series1 XJ6 for 5 times the money asked for the Series1 XJ12 also appearing in Clarke's ad clip? Not sure I would, but like the Wizard of Oz, I'm biased toward the V12 . . . fewer, but not rare . . . pity that Jaguar never produced an octet-cam 96 valve H24!!! LOL.

Clarke, as you know I'm no expert on the XJ series . . . been learning for near 20 years and (including the later XJ40s) I'm still learning. Don't burn me for admitting that beyond our incredible Daimler V12 Vanden Plas back in the '80s, it was the other Jaguar saloons, earlier and later, and also the sports GTs which dominated our experience.

Cheers,

Ken

This is what Hagerty says about 1971 4.2 XJ6 values. This is $ CAD which is on par with $ AUD. Of course, what it's worth 'on paper' isn't much of a comfort if it's sitting unsold for a year.

Current Values

  • #1 Concours $42,300
Condition #1 vehicles are the best in the world. The visual image is of the best vehicle, in the right colors, driving onto the lawn at the finest concours. Perfectly clean, the vehicle has been groomed down to the tire treads. Painted and chromed surfaces are mirror-like. Dust and dirt are banned, and materials used are correct and superbly fitted. The one word description for #1 vehicles is "concours."
  • #2 Excellent $30,400
  • #3 Good $18,800
  • #4 Fair $8,500

Default Values....

Interesting numbers from Hagerty. I wonder where they're getting the data. I've never seen an early XJ6 in any condition (even perfect) bring more than $10-$15k. The basket cases are a few hundred, if that.

Maybe they're publishing those values to justify their insurance rates. That would make sense.....

Very interesting Adrian. As you correctly say, book value means little if no one wants the car! Still, it's useful to see how the values are trending from an insurers perspective. Looking at those figures for a '71 Series 1, and having plugged in the data for my Series 3 out of interest, the Canadian market seems even stronger than ours. It's a bit more anecdotal evidence that values are on a steady upswing.

The main thing I'm taking away from this discussion is that the XJ6 market varies wildly from country to country. The US seems to have the cheapest cars on offer, which is understandable considering the importance Jaguar placed on that market & the amount that were sold there. Plus the US has generally got lower car prices than the rest of the world, apart from the Gulf States, with the country awash with old classics.
New Jags here have been hit by our crippling luxury car tax for decades now, so we have some of the most expensive Jags on Earth. & this price disparity stays with the cars on the 2nd hand market, until they reach an age that makes Buyers wary, when they fall spectacularly into old clunker territory, where I like to trawl for treasures. My 99 S Type being my best find, my S3 being my worst!
