Windows roll up, click, then stop.
Hey guys, so the Jag I'm working on has this weird fault with the windows and I'm really not sure where to look, in the car, for the solution. The windows, all of them, role down just fine but then when I try and role them back up they start to, you hear a click from behind the dash and they stop. You then have to wait a minute and repeat until the window is all of the way up.
Is this a sign of a bad relay? I'm assuming that's the click that I'm hearing. If not the relay maybe the switches just need to be cleaned? I saw an old thread about how the old jags need the switches cleaned if they aren't working which is why I'm leaning a little more towards that. Also, different windows stop at different times. I.e. drivers side will roll fine for 5 sec. then stop, passenger side 10 sec. then stop.
If clean is the answer, what is the proper method of cleaning and is there some type of contact grease I need to use? Mechincal stuff is where I normally find myself working, so electrics is a new topic for me.
Thanks!!

Not sure about the Ser I and II sedans but the Ser IIIs have a power window relay that feeds power to two circuit breakers. From the breakers power is branched out to left side and right side windows.
From what you're saying I'm inclined to say the relay or the breakers are overheating....possibly because the windows are dragging and drawing too many amps? Do you have any sense that the windows are struggling? if so, that would be a clue.
The switches on a Ser III can simply be pried open...gently. Clean the contacts with a pencil eraser; reassemble.
Cheers

Adding to Dougs scribe.
The "click" you hear is the window circuit thermal breaker doing exactly what it is designed to do.
My findings over all my time with them is the window glass is dragging in the Bailey felt. Silicone spray is the best I have found to free them up, and restore some sense to the system. Use the plastic tube supplied with the spray, and get it "down inside" the section inside the door.
It will take time. One window at a time, and work it bit by bit until a smooth down and up flow is achieved.
