Windscreen Washer Pump Repair. Series 1 XJ6
My windscreen washer pump failed today, after checking the fuse I checked the switch. Taking the wires off the back the pump worked when jumping them to each other. All easy, I removed the switch and took it apart, cleaned it up and put it back in. All good, then later in the day the the pump failed again so I removed the wires and jumped them with no luck.
So I removed the pump and connected it to 12V, no go.
First off I removed the bracket and took the bottom of the pump off, the bent the metal tabs on the motor back.
Next I carefully stated to remove the armature, but only enough to see how to take it apart. I opened it enough to wriggle the plastic block out with the brushes taking care not to damage anything. Once the brushes were out I removed the armature. (be careful not to lose the tiny washer off the top of the armature.)
I cleaned up the brushes and the commutator, and glued the broken pieces back onto the block that holds the brushes. Fiddly job but my mini vice & tweezers helped.
I put the armature half way back in keeping it facing up as not to drop the tiny washer then fitted the brushes over the commutator and wriggled the plastic block back into place and tested it before going any further.
After testing I bent the metal tabs back down and assembled the rest of the pump and put it back in the car. All good. Best it has ever worked in the last 4 1/2 years.
Or if you are more into replacing rather than repairing you can get a new one on Ebay for $35.

I wish I could repair the old Lucas 2SJ and 5SJ windshield washer pumps used in all Jaguar from 1957 to 1968. i have been collecting a number of them since 2004 trying to find a good one for my '65 S type. They burn up so easily. Inside there is an armature that spins surrounded by a steel magnet circle with brushes or "carbons" . Must be the armature burned up, since everything else always looks fine.

Definitely more satisfaction than spending $35 and fitting a new part. Maybe it will work a few more years before I have to part with hard earned to replace it.
