Wood Dash 86 xj6
Do you mean remove t redo it and replace it or merely redo it.
I have a vague recollection of a shop in the Santa Pula, California area that does them. but, it is up to you to remove it and ship it to them.
Wild shot. A shop that does high end cabinetry or antique restoration. But, again, you do the R&R.
You might shop for a core unit, o as not to disable your car for an extended period.
Or, if yours is really bad, get a much better one from a vendor. David Boger of Everydayxj comes to mind.
Mine isn't perfect, but decent. Cleaning and waxing with a polish with high carnauba wax content made it much nicer. Time for a redo, if I ever get the starter issue sorted!!!

I am tracking a couple on E-bay. One is NOS - never installed. Another is "Refurbished". Both are running about 300 bucks. For my car, I would "Like" to refurbish my original dash. However, I am not above putting one in just to drive it when the time comes, in order to take my time refitting the original. Either way, the cost of having somebody else complete the work is way up there from what I have seen.

British Autowood in Orlando Florida does outstanding work for Jaguars, but cheap it is not.
you might contact Saul and ask him if he has a finished dash he can sell you or even exchange for yours.

I can spell, I just have clumsy fingers!!!
Santa Paula, Ca. Jut north of Los Angeles!!
Yeah, I see why it is expensive. Very delicate veneer over a base wood. Easy to mess up. Time consuming to fix. and finish.
Why not get a core and tackle t, then if it looks better than the one in the car, swap it out.
My adventures with cabinetry have been erratic. From not too bad to awful!!

Basically you have a slab of veneered plywood with a Polyurethane finish.
If you need, I can tell you how to disassemble the dash (done it more than once), how to remove the current finish (carefully) and how to refurbish the slab with Polyurethane (the Toughest finish on the Planet).
I haven't seen the need to do Nix's dash (it's Pristine) but I've done a bit of furniture (same sort of thing) with good Success.

I designed a CNC program for mine when I refurbished it. The original wood had some damage so I opted for a nice oak hardboard, set it up for aftermarket gauges and cut it all out of on board to keep the grain texture into the glovebox panel. I then applied a dark cherrywood stain and poly urethaned it-turned out nice-I also have since stained the door panel inserts to match as well. I also have the program saved for the OEM dash layout if you'd like a panel cut out of your choice of wood, then you could re-finish yourself? Just an option.

1. Way back when, dash refinishing was a topic on another forum. A gun stock finish was discussed. Another was a cabinet makers finish. neither included polyurethane. Each looked really nice.
2. I stumbled across a wood working show yesterday. "Tommy Mac". The project was an intricately carved chest. The finish was carnauba wax! The wood was warmed to enable the flow into tight corners of the carving. Looked great on TV. probably even better in real life.
Were I to redo mine, I'd try the wax system. Warmer than shiny poly...

I ended up doing a cut/buff on the poly similar to a new paint finish-it turned out looking like one big piece of glass! I'm tinted the glass to eliminate any chance of glare. In low light all of the subtle reflections on it look pretty nice.
Hello,
I am interested in getting one of these made. I am interested in a Black Walnut that is all dark wood with no light wood in it.
Could you give me an idea on cost? I was mainly trying to find one to use for a pattern, but this would for sure save me some work.
Thank you.
