Default XJ brake conversion

Hello All,

I know this would have been discussed in the past, have search this forum but no thread turned up.

I would like to know if the XJS rear hubs with the outboard brake caliper mounts are a direct replacment to the XJ6 series II rear diff.

If not - do I need to mod the yokes and driver shaft.

Thank you for your help.

AFAIK,no, the hubs wil not interchange.

However, some XJS owners with inboard brakes have taken an entire rear suspension assembly from an outboard brake XJS and installed it with realtively little difficulty.

I think the same woud appy to an XJ6

Cheers
DD

Hmmm...interesting, me and a buddy were talking about when we have to do my brakes if it would be easier to just put a whole new rear end on the car. Do you know what years I would want to look at to replace it with? I know the 91's don't have inboard brakes, do you know what other years to look at?

Thanks

I'm pretty sure 1991 XJS does not have inboard brakes. I think the outboard brakes are 1994-1996.

Hmmm, I was just basing it on my neighbor, he has a 91 XJ6 and when I mentioned what a pain in the *** the rear brakes were he said that he had outboard brakes on this. That said he could of been mistaken, or maybe the XJ6 and XJS switched over at different times?

Oh okay, yea, the suspension on the 1988 and up XJ sedan is different than the one on your 1986 sedan, whereas, all of the XJS cars have suspension very similar to yours. In other words, the XJ sedan up through 1987, and all XJS cars, have pretty much the same suspension. The 1994-1996 XJS cars are slightly different in that they have outboard brakes. 1988 and up XJ sedans (XJ6, XJ8, etc) have a totally different suspension. While it may look similar, most of the parts do not interchange.

If you have a 1986 XJ6 sedan, and you want to swap out a rear end to get outboard brakes, you're probably going to need a 1994-1996 XJS suspension. Trying to retrofit a 1988 and up XJ sedan suspension is going to be one heck of a PITA.
