Default Xj12 1973 Master Cylinder Rebuild - Help Please :)

Hi, I’m attempting to replace the seals on my early S1 brake master cylinder and I can’t figure out how to disassemble the second plunger so that I can change the small seal on the end.

The factory manual point #7 instructions tell me what to do, but are unclear to me, and I feel like I’m going to break something when follow them and I compress the spring. Any ideas?

Cheers!

Instructions I’m unclear about.

Plunger I am trying to disassemble.

Whole cylinder.

I think I would find a way to compress the spring by itself, think like a suspension coil spring, then the retainer leaf can be removed without breaking that yellowed plastic piece.

maybe squeeze the spring with needle nose pliers and use a bunch of zip ties to keep compressed

Job Done! Was probably meant to compress the other end and disassemble, but this worked just fine and allowed me to put a new seal on the end of the shaft easily. Thank-you, Bullitandy, great idea!

Whoop!
