Extremely interesting. I was trying to figure out the concept until I saw the pictures!! The thousand word thing is true. Got it. Clever, for sure.

As of yesterday, my boot worked just fine. Opens far enough for me to do my things. Stays up. No fix needed. So, I will not.

I do admire the strut concept. Tempting ! Resisted, at least fore now.

Added note: I load and unload from the back. Never occurred to me to side load/unload.

Learned something new, always good.

Update on XJ6 Trunk/Boot-lid extended opening project and survey:

1. How many have a problem with weak springs. Estimated Kit Price: $30-40? (Strut, bracket end fittings and hardware)
2. How many would want the 50% increase opening capability (69-70 degrees, up from 41). Estimated kit price: $145-160? (machined hinge/bracket, struts, end fittings, bearings and hardware)
3. How many would want booth Kits? $175-200?

This is not a commitment, just and indication of interest.

I have got the prototype geometry to work on the combination Hinge/Bracket with two 11" x 40 lbs gas struts. On level ground the Lid will stay open (68-70 degrees) hands free and without a broomstick. The tolerances are sensitive, 1/8" at the hinge is more than 1" at the lip. (16 lbs at the hinge is only 2 lbs at the trunk lip). The 40 lb strut has no margin for wind or non-level parking, so final configuration should be 55-60 lbs struts. The bottom of the strut mounts in an existing 5/16" hole in OEM hinge arm and the top of strut to one of three holes in new hinge/bracket.

Projected Combination Hinge/Bracket RH & LH

Full open..69 degrees, hands free. two 11" struts mounted to OEM hinge arm

OEM hinge arm with existing 5/16 mounting hole for strut end fitting

Single Strut OEM Spring Assist. (final installation would have strut on other side of arm)

Optional cover for Spring Assist strut

I would go for the 50% greater opening kit at estimated $145-$160.

I would be interested in the wider opening brackets and struts (ship to the UK) I presume this would also fit a Series 1.

Nigel,
Info from an E-bay listing for a used S3 OEM hinge assembly, the only difference between a XJ6 S1, S2 and S3 hinge assembly is the trunk light switch and striker placement.

Nigel,

Elinor has graciously tested the 11" Spring Assist Strut on Her S2, and found: "Series 2 trunk hinges have shorter clearance to the trunk floor than do Series 3 by one inch. This means the strut you sent will not work on Series 2 cars"
(Thank you Elinor)

See pictures below, Can you measure distance from 5/16' hole in Hinge arm to floor on your S1.
My S3 is 11.25". This may not effect the extended opening hinge/bracket project, but I do want to address any difference between models.

Thanks
David

Yes, David, here is the problem with Series 2.
Clearance is 10.5 inches as opposed to 11.5 inches for Series 3.

Hi David
Unfortunately I don't have access to my car at the moment as I'm away on holiday, I'll get have to get back to you in a couple of weeks when I get home or if anyone else with a S1 can help in the meantime.
Thanks to Elinor for her assistance with the measurement.

David - I have a Series II Coupe. Is there something you want me to measure?

Bill,

If you could check these two dimensions on your S2, it would be helpful... Thanks much

If any one has an S1, would appreciate these dimensions also...

David - my 1975 SII coupe

centerline of bolt to centerline of hole 10 1/2"

Centerline of hole to shelf (without carpet &padding) 13 3/4

(with carpeting & padding) 13 1/4"

And... I hit my head measuring it!

Now I'm SO confused. Hmm.
I would have thought Series 2 was Series 2 no matter Coupe or not and trunks were the same.
Later today I'll get some pictures of measurements of my (saloon) trunk and post them in this thread.
Right now I have to get Trucklet to an 8am appointment.

Let me measure again, and with pic this time tonight. I may have measured not to the bumped up shelf, but to the bottom. I'll get back to you.

Durn, I tossed the "pooped out" struts I took off of my Jeep's hatch. I might have used one or both and created something like that. Probably not as elegant, albeit...

Hinge hole to carpet measures about 10.5 inches.

Center to center holes measure about 10.5 inches.

This is for Xj6L Series 2 sedan.

Okay, pics attached. I measured from the hole directly down which is actually the longer measurement. If I measure a little on an angle, which is where you seem to be attaching the expansion piston to, it measures shorter at 10 7/16ths

To the bottom

To the angled piece
