xj6 S2 gearbox or Diff issues - please help
Hi
I changed the throttle cable on my 4.2 xj6 S2 and after I had tightened up the gearbox end of the cable, the auto gear change went from smooth to really clunky – especially when slowing down and into the slowest (lowest gear)
When I first drove it after changing the speedo cable, I drove about a mile and then heard a few clunks and am wondering if one of the speedo cogs in the gearbox has broken off and fell into the gearbox and broke some teeth on the lower gears???
However, I did have a leak on the rear diff and wonder if it is that which is making the gear change clunky and whether the gearbox has nothing to do with it.
More info: there now also appears to be an occasional grumbling noise but it is intermittent and seems to be in the lower gears and the diff seems to clunk a bit when the gear is first engaged (could still be a missing tooth on the gearbox gears???)
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Richard

What happens if you remove the speedo cable, do the symptoms disappear ? It's difficult to diagnose on the internet, but first off, I'd remove the speedo drive gear. It can be pulled out after you've taken off the drive cable. I once had mine out because the speedo showed too low a speed. There were two drive gears used, one tooth difference on each to allow two different axle ratios to be used. My car had the wrong one from new !!

thanks Fraser.
i have tried removing the speedo cable and there was no change. I will remove the drive gear next and see what happens and maybe replace that. I will keep you posted if thats okay - need to get my motivation levels back first!
