Default XJ6 series 3 Cold start injector replacement

Hello all,

I have recently discovered there is a gas leak coming from the cold start injector on my XJ6. There is a tiny bubble of gas coming out of the upper, plastic section of the injector.

I have been able to find the replacement part from Jaguar Heaven in CA.

I am posting to ask advice on the replacement of the injector. This is a procedure I have never done before and would like to know what to do.

Would like to say that this sight has been an amazing help with various gremlins in my '87's electrics over the last few years! So thanks to all who post!

Many thanks!

as far as I know, you replace the entire injector, not the plastic part, it is a sealed assembly, can't be separated, again as far as I know. What part exactly did you buy? Can you post a picture?

you need a hex wrench to remove the bolts and a new gasket which should come with a new injector. very simple to replace, just remove the injector with hose attached and in a quick maneuver, pull it and insert it in the new injector.

nothing to it.

Thanks Jose,

I did buy the whole assembly (link below).

I was just curious If I would have to release the fuel pressure or not.

Thanks for your advise!

you welcome warren, no need to depressurize, just wait till the engine is cold.

did you get it used? no gasket? the old gasket might tear during removal of the bad injector.

let's hope it works. you can get a new one if that one is d.o.a.

Technically it is a VALVE (ON/OFF) not an injector. The part is known as a CSV (Cold Start Valve) and is common for most L Jetronic systems. It is not 'pulsed' on/off for precise fuel delivery, it just sprays gasoline into the intake manifold during cranking below a certain engine temp to aid in starting. It is not ECM controlled.

You could probably install a Datsun 280Z CSV or some other cheap/available valve made for the injection systems at that time (BMW or VW) and it should work. (I think I have done this 30 years ago)

Thanks again Bob,

took your advice and just ordered a re-made gasket from eBay!

Thanks for the info Bob, I already purchased a refurb'd part from Jaguar Heaven. Good to know that other parts will work as sourcing an original took a little searching around.

So far, so good. Fault found. fix found. As good as it gets. At times, there are multiple fixes. Useful to many.

Is the day of DIY gasket making a lost "art" ?

Or, is it a "seal" a lot different.

And, in the "modern world", chemistry!!! RTV as a gasket. Very effective in the right place...

you can use Hylomar which is used in racing cars to seal gasoline leaks.

So replaced the cold start injector, thanks for the help guys. The car started straight up no problems, before it was taking a few turns to fire. Now however I have the issue of a rough idle. Not so different to before when in park but really struggling in drive.

Could the the issue be related?

struggling in drive?

when was the last time the spark plugs and Oxygen sensor were replaced?

air and fuel filters? ignition cap and wires?

doesn't sound like a fuel issue but electrical.

Plugs, filters and ignition cap all within the last 12 months!

Just tried it it again and there's a swaying/rocking motion with the engine too. Could be an injector not in sync?

To clarify, did this idle condition present itself only after the cold start injector was replaced? If so, carefully back track over all your work. You may have disturbed some wiring or the like. .That's not a criticism.....it happens to everyone from time to time.

The fuel injector harness can be especially delicate if it's original....as can the small wires going to the coil.

Cheers

Thanks Doug,

This is highly Likely! I will check every connection in the vicinity of the Cold Start Valve and let you know if the issue is due to my clumsiness.

So I re-traced my steps and it seems I had broke a connection somewhere.

Thanks for for everyone's help!
