Hello,

After a year of ownership, I finally managed to get back to England to drive my 1976 XJC 4.2. Now after a few weeks driving this magnificent car, I see it needs a top up of engine oil.

Can anyone advise me what grade engine oil I should use?

As a top up, ANY clean 20W50 will suffice.

BUT, if that oil has sat in there for a year, I would change it, but then I am a fussy type.

 

You can also use 15W40. I used this on my Series 3 which is the same engine apart from having EFI.

 

Yeah, I am with Grant. Change the oil and filter. 20-50 is my choice.
Any quality brand just fine. Just shop the best price.


Stateside, I usually choose Valvoline, also branded as Carquest.
Just fine for my critters...

Thanks for the advice; after reading your replies I topped up with 15W50.
