Default XJC Alternator Upgrade

I posted this separately from the other ALTERNATOR thread as I have a SII with a Lucas 20ACR that seems to be putting out less than 12v with A/C, headlights, radio on. Yes, first thing is I'll check all connections; the battery is new and doing its job. I've looked at threads in the past and have read about the upgrades. Is there anything new that someone would recommend if I decide to pull it and go with something else? My XJC is about to become my primary vehicle for a couple of months and I can't lay it up for more than an evening to accomplish any swap out.

Many thanks, Bill

Bill:

If you are relying on the dash voltmeter alone, you might be mislead. Good as indicators only, and slow on the "uptake".

I made a patch cord for my HF sourced VOM. Plugs into the cigar outlet. I can read volts at various RPM's and loads, in real time. I thought I was a genius!!! Naah, plug in meters are on the market!! I exonorated my alternator and convicted my battery!!! New battery and all is well.

Thanks for that other thing. Done. Enjoy the fan addition

I just put in one of these - looks like a pretty good deal and it's brand new with a reasonable warranty unlike the junky rebuilds that you get from Napa and the like.

I did the swap (using the John's Cars kit) years ago and have been through two rebuilt 10si style alternators since then. This one has 100 AMPS and new - not overly pricey so I figured what the hell. Nice and red too (although you can't see it under the A/C Compressor - shame)!

Looking interesting. What did you install it in? Did you have to make any modifications? Was the pulley correct? Did the dash meter react any differently?

Oh - I should have said. It's a Series III. Volts show nice and high now even at idle with everything (A/C, fans, headlights) running.

Anybody got any ideas as to whether the SII is the same install as an SIII?

Is it the 4.2? If so it will be the same. The V12 I don't know.

So it was just a straight bolt in for your SIII?

Not quite - you need either the John's cars kit or you need to fabricate your own. I know some have used the air pump location to mount a GM alternator.
