Default YUCK, mothball stench, how to get rid of it

Just purchased an 86 XJ6 with a very strong mothball smell. I have tries using charcoal, coffee and baking soda with the windows closed. This helped somewhat. Any other ideas? Thanks

Hello, David, welcome to our playroom.

Leave the windows open (outdoors will work faster and stray cats etc. will be repelled by the smell - for a while) to let ambient air circulate. It will still take a while, but it does work.

Other than that, you could try a small ion generator and see if that helps, but that releases Ozone into your car and you might not want that either, as it's corrosive and hard on nearly everything.

When you get a chance, stop by the New Members area,

and post an introduction.

you know those little bags of Dessicant that come inside women's purses, shoe boxes, electronics, and other articles?

those absorb odors, I think they are called Silica.

get a bunch of them and throw them on the floor.

also remove all the mats and under-mat pads and let them out under the sun. Spray
Lysol on them.

I've used a technique from my former profession. Blowers. Open a back door. Place as large a fan as you have their. The popular box fans work well. Open a front door on the opposite side. Block the lamp button to save the battery. Let the fan run a few hours.

Or try Refreshe, an odor remover. I prefer the unscented. It works!!!
And removes unwanted odors, not merely masks it.

I imagine that the carpet is were it is coming from. Pull the removable bits and put them out in the sun until they smell good. I like fabreez as it is safe for fabrics and no masking odor. Only works on "organic" molecules what ever that is.

Chemistry. Something of which I only have an inkling and my daughter, none at all.

1. Flowers. Organic. As is poop, urine, etc.

2. Sulpher Dioxide. Rotten egg smell. In spite of the generic name, inorganic.

My daughter avoids what she calls "chemicals". Not realizing that much of what, if not all, she touts as organic is a chemical!!!!

An Ozone machine works really well, there are plenty of resources on the web on how to do it.

My brother in law has a car rental company, its an essential tool for that business.

I learned about them when I worked for the coroner when I was younger, its pretty invaluable in the clean up process.

Ozone. Yup.

In my former profession, smoke damaged property was frequent. But, companies specialized in 'fixing" that. Ozone generators.

No amount of shampoos or airing out would have got rid of the horrible stench coming from the inside of my original seats. Ozone would have worked, though.

Default Thanks all

I have tried containers of fresh coffee grinds, charcoal crickets and baking soda. Slightly better. I put my nose down onto the carpets/mats and took a whiff. BOY was that a mistake but it did tell me what is holding onto that awful smell. So, first I will have the carpets and mats cleaned. If that doesn't work Ill try the ozone. Thanks again
