The parking brake has to be engaged to get the top to work. I had a similar problem with my 1990 and tried several things then I was told by a member of this forum about the parking brake and I felt really stupid when I engaged the parking brake and it worked fine. Just a thought.

Default or.....

(Assuming you have your parking brake on)

It is often the switch thats gone wonky. I had a similar problem with one of my window switches, ie it would drive the window up but not down again.

It's easy to remove the switch from the console, just pry it out gently, then unplug the wiring harness.

The quick and dirty way to clean it is to squirt WD40 everywhere, but its fairly simple to take the switch apart and clean the contacts. I just rubbed mine with light emery paper to make the contacts shiny again. (They had gotten quite a lot of carbon build up on them)
