@Bfin

The brake light switch on the brake pedal is known to cause issues on some XJSes. Have you done a continuity test and confirmed you are getting a good ground when the switch is closed when you press the brake pedal ?

Also I'm assuming you have checked the fuse and all is ok ? And the bulbs ?

Not sure if your car is a US or EUR spec car..... do you have the high level brake light on the trunk lid ? I had a short in here after I removed it and refitted it to my car after its re-paint, so every time I pressed the brake pedal it blew the fuse.

Agree your multi plug does sound like a trailer hook up...... don't even know if it was possible to fit a towbar to an XJS...... never seen one with it

I was going to post this as a new thread, but saw this was related.
Just recently had a brake light problem that was odd. Checked for power at the brake light switch with the load side wire off, had 12V to ground- so started chasing the wires on back towards the rear.

After wasting an hour, went back to the switch.
It would show 12V with the load side brake light wire off, but when connected, 0 volts. The contacts were just good enough to make no load.
Funny because those two bulbs do not pull much in the way of amps.

Ordered a new switch.
Hope this helps.
