Which model do you have?

Assuming the V12, it is basically as follows:
  • It is best to have very little fuel in the tank
  • Remove battery cover and disconnect battery
  • Remove spare wheel cover and remove spare wheel
  • Remove boot (trunk) carpet from floor
  • unbolt/screw the metal covers below the battery and to its side
  • This reveals the small tank under the battery and the fuel pump to its left held by a round bracket with a foam anti-noise cover inside the bracket
  • Under the boot floor (outside) under the small tank is a rubber bung in the floor, prise this out and you see a drain plug on the bottom of the small tank. Undo the plug and drain the fuel out. It will all come out, main tank as well, unless you block the feed from the main tank to the small tank
  • Once drained, undo the fuel pump electrical and pipe connectors and replace with new pump and reconnect pipes and electrics
  • Change the fuel filter (located behind where the spare wheel was)
  • Change the small tank sock filter. You will see the outlet from the small tank to the pump is held by a locking ring. carefully knock the locking ring anticlockwise to undo it and remove the outlet. You will see a filter on the inner end of this pipe. This should be chnaged and the small tank cleaned out if it is full of grot.
  • Refit all bits, drain plug, etc. Clean boot floor. refill tank and off you go!

The small sump tank provides an uninterupted slosh-proof fuel supply to the pump.

Most manufacturers accomplish the same thing by internal baffles in the fuel tank but Jaguar is, well.....you know. Different.

It's one of those things where you're tempted to say "What the *^*^ ?" but, instead, we just say "Now there's an interesting design feature"

In aircraft it's known as a "surge" box, keeps a head of fuel on the pump at all times during maneuvering, climbs, descents etc when the tank is less then full. My MG Midget had plenty of baffles in the stock tank but the aftermarket one I put in did not....one long, sweeping turn with a quarter tank let me find out how valuable those baffles were as she sputtered and almost died by the end of the turn as all the fuel ended up on the left side of the tank and the pump pickup was on the right!

thank you all. i removed the fuel pump. i tried testing it by attaching positive and negative cable at one end and connected it to the car battery. it did not work at all. is that the proper way to test it ? Also how can i replace the the fuel pump "screen filter"(not the fuel filter). is it inside the surge tank ? how can i replace it ? what would be the best replacement pump for a 1988 xjs ?

TREperformance has been manufacturing our own OEM replacement fuel pumps for over 10 years. Do not be fooled by other companies who claim to have tested their pumps, we have sold over 100,000 of these fuel pumps and have had the flow tested by RC Engineering to verify the output. This pump is very similar to the Bosch 044 fuel pump. This is not a dealer part, Airtex, Walbro, or any other manufacturer. It is a TREperformance brand fuel pump.

This pump will fit every model, engine, type or style for every vehicle listed and can flow anywhere from 15-115 psi, which is determined by your fuel pressure regulator, usually about 145 liters per hour at 12v and 43psi. All of our pumps are always in stock and will often ship the day of payment.

TREperformance Fuel Pump Guarantee:
TRE in-tank and external in-line fuel pumps have been tested to perform for many years even in heavily driven applications. We back our fuel pumps with a 1 week 100% money back guarantee, less expedited shipping, and a 1 year free replacement guarantee! We rarely have issues with our pumps, and you will not find a guarantee like this from other fuel pump manufacturers such as Walbro. If there are any problems when you receive your pump, just contact us within 1 week of receiving your fuel pump in the mail and we will either replace the pump for you, or refund your full payment less any expediting shipping fees. In addition, if your pump is defective or broken we will replace it free of charge anytime within the first year! However, make sure you clean your entire fuel system including the fuel tank before replacing a fuel pump, failure to do so will void the guarantee. Just contact us via email to RMA@TREperformance.com to receive return information. No returns are accepted without an RMA number. Our pumps are manufactured according to strict guidelines in order to maintain ISO 9002 and ISO/TS 16949 quality system certifications.

Save some money and try one of our pumps. We back them with a 1 year warranty!
Thank you for considering TREperformance Fuel Pumps!

I am no fuel pump expert; but 43 psi is only just enough pressure to open the pressure regulator, I think, repeat think. Best to buy a pump from a reliable Jaguar supplier (eg Cov West, David Manners, SNG Barratt) I think.

Sorry too thread high jack! And a higher psi really won't help all that much . As long as it has a little bit more than required it'll be purfect .

I have checked my Jaguar manual and the psi required is 36-37 psi as maintained by the B bank (US driver's side) fuel pressure regulator. So in principle a 45 psi pump should do it.

FWIW, I still think it might be best to get one from (eg) Rockauto, but looking at the cheap ones they list, they seem the same as for sale on Ebay etc etc. The fuel pump is vital, obviously, but whether the expensive ones are better than the cheap ones, I have no idea! They have loads to choose from at prices that seem sensible. Choose jaguar, then your model and tear, then fuel and it lists loads at all prices:

I got a cheap one from Rock Auto for my LS last month ($48), lasted 3 weeks! Went with the Airtex (Walbro) one ($112) sometimes it doesn't pay to go cheaper.
