Default 1988 XJ-S charging issue

Hey all before going through the removal of the Alternator I wanted to ask if there is any other reason that I would not be getting enough charge. Normal would run between 12 to 13 amps charging, although now bairly pushing 8 to 9, which is not enough to keep battery charged. I have checked and now replaced the belts. Checked all wires no bad wires.
Can you give me any other hints??? Change to new Alternator???

Again thanks again in advance for all your help...

Randy

Randall, if you have an externally charged field alternator, then if that wire is not getting sufficient power, it can cause what you are seeing. But, since you are only seeing reduced charging ability, odds are that wire is fine and you simply have an alternator that is starting to go.

if you are not sure if you have an internally or externally fed alternator, it is easy to figure out. If you have only a single wire coming off of the alternator, then it is internally fed. If you have 2 or more wires, then it is externally fed.
