1989 XJ-S V-12 Stopped Running
hi childeric
think about tying a 'toothbrush' (not yours obv's) to the end of a long pole and then you can keep doping it with carb cleaner and then use a compressor to blow off any 'crud' and dry it all off
if you get her running then i would leave the gap alone, namely because its a pia to adjust 'so if she's running then she's running, so probably best to leave well alone'

Hi Childeric
Bit of a false dawn on that one then
But how long was She running before the engine cut out, or did you just switch her off and then She wouldn't Start again
If you can describe exactly what happened, then we may be able to come up with another solution to help fix the problem

I got out. Pulled the fuel pump relay and cranked it a few times with the throttle wide open (again to clear any flooding). - Nothing. I waited a few minutes and put the relay back in. Cranked it over and she ran for less than a minute, then sputtered and stopped. Not like someone flipped a switch like last time.
I went ahead and ordered a new CPS switch from SNG. Should get it today or tomorrow. I pulled 5 plugs, All of them looked good. No fouling of any kind, and very dry. I stuck a borescope into the cylinders - looked good. It will be a day or two before I try to start it again. I need to replace the 2 low side A/C hoses while I am down this far, replace the cruise control bellows, and I am going to put in two new coils.
Hi Childeric
Sounds like you may have a Fuel Delivery Problem, so if you can do it safely then you really need the Pipe hanging over the Wing Trick, with the 'King Lead' taken out of the 'Dizzy' just to make sure that She Cannot Start or produce any Sparks
So only do this outside in the Open with a Fire Extinguisher Standing by etc
ie The Pipe that delivers Fuel to the Engine, pushed inside another Tube and then Hung over the Fender/Wing as you need to see loads of Fuel pouring into a Container while you 'Crank' Her
Don't be Fooled by Residual Pressure as this needs to happen all the while She's Cranking, where when She is Running the Fuel Pump Relay takes over

When she dies and won't restart, the first thing In would do is check you have spark, either at coil output or at plug lead. It's the easiest thing to do and will help verify if it's a spark rather than fuel problem (or both, but you need to know the spark situation first.) Otherwise, you can waste a lot of time chasing down the root cause.

She Lives!!! I changed the CPS with a shiny new one from SNG Barratt and since I was there anyway removing plugs to check them, I put in two brand new coils. Cranked her over and she started first time. I let her run for quite some time just to clean out the cylinders. I turned it off and on several times. Fired up right away each time. No problem!
I just wanted to express my thanks again to everyone who helped and provided ideas! I hope one day, I too, may be able to assist someone else in the same manner. All of you on this forum make it a very special place!
If I have to recommend one over the other, I would recommend Star Trek. Much more cerebral.
