1989 XJS, horns going off all the time
Hello to all,
First, my horns did not work so I started testing at the horn relay on the top left of engine compartment.
I found that I lost ground somewhere at the steering column.
I ended up replacing the two of the copper C-shaped contacts that ride on the steering column that are readily available to buy new.
I do have ground all the time on the black wire contact, but I also have it at the purple/black circuit further down the column all the time too which supposedly I should not have ground.
If I lift up the purple/black (wire) c-shaped tab off the steering column, if does disconnect the horn circuit.
I am continuously getting ground from the horn rod and have to play with it by not tightening the horn rod nut, then try to tighten the nut.
I install the steering cover, walk away thinking I'm all set and horns get stuck on when I turn ignition on.
Something is up on the inside of the steering column as it interacts with the horn rod shaft at the very bottom where horn rod is connecting to whatever.
Looking for some advice before I go any further. Gracias for any help!
