There was an optional dealer installed factory alarm available in 1989. It was installed under the driver's seat and had the ability to lock and un-lock the doors, sound its own horn, flash the lights, and disable starting. A red LED warning light was usually installed on the steering column cover and had a valet switch underneath the column cover, and the system had a backup gel-cell battery - also installed under the driver's seat. The remotes were a nearly square fob with a single white button and a Red LED. There were some variations of the FOB over the years. That basic alarm system was used thru MY 93.5 when the newer alarm system came along. The facelift XJS's, beginning in '92, were pre-wired at the right rear area of the trunk/boot for the newer alarm system to come. The '92 and '93 (to '93.5 which had the optional system installed) used a
Jaguar adapter harness to enable it to use the older alarm system and backup battery - which was then installed in the new location at the right rear area of the trunk/boot.
If the optional system was installed in your '89, you should have the alarm box and battery under the driver's seat. You should also have the Red LED and Valet switch located somewhere on the steering column cover. The flashing red radio light has nothing to do with the alarm system. I don't recall the
function of the radio flashing red LED on the '89, nor what might be causing your horn to sound. Someone else can offer comments on that.--
